Nostalgia is a hell of a drug.
Last week, Diablo 2: Resurrected — Infernal Edition hit Steam. The 26-year-old title, which was remastered in 2021 and released on modern platforms, received a new update and launched the Valve-owned platform for the very first time.
It seems that was a wise move by Blizzard, as it has already overtaken Diablo 4, a much newer game, in the player count department.
Diablo 2: Resurrected Has Overtaken Diablo 4’s Steam Player Count
Diablo 2 was released in the glorious year 2000. At the time, it became the “Fastest Selling Computer Game Ever”, according to Guinness Book of World Records, and its legacy only grew from there. In 2021, Diablo 2: Resurrected was released, featuring remastered graphics and a few other tweaks, and just a handful of days ago, Diablo 2 got a third release, Diablo 2: Resurrected – Inferno Edition.
This time, Blizzard added “a new class, fresh content, quality‑of‑life upgrades, and an overhauled endgame,” and apparently, this, coupled with a Steam release, is exactly what Diablo fans needed.
The new class, Warlock, came to both Diablo 2: Resurrected and Diablo 4, but it was the former that gained the most traction.
According to SteamDB, at the time of writing, Diablo 2: Resurrected – Infernal Edition has 5,318 players, peaking at 8,683 players in the last 24 hours, and 11,749 since release. During those same time periods, Diablo 4 managed 4,927, 8,109, and 11,047 players, meaning the 26-year-old title valiantly triumphed over the title released in 2023.
The reviews for both games over the past week paint a similar picture, too. Diablo 2: Resurrected has received 1,879 positive reviews and only 215 negative, for a 89.76 percent positive score. Diablo 4 has received 272 positive and 69 negative reviews over the past week, for a net 74 percent positive.
While the two games’ fortunes are slightly mixed, Diablo fans are feasting right now.
