It may seem kinda silly with how easy modern Pokemon games are, but there was a time when they really used to throw hands. People that have been revisiting Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen thanks to the new Nintendo Switch port have recently been discovering this, whether they struggle against Sabrina and her Alakazam, or Lance and his vicious team of Dragons.
For some, they really enjoy the challenge, and the truly bold usually go one step further to make the game even harder for themselves by imposing their own rules, leading to things like Nuzlocke runs. However, even the most brutal of Nuzlocke challenges has nothing on what this one Reddit user is doing, as they’ve tasked themselves with beating the game with a single Caterpie.
A Pokemon Fan Is Taking On FireRed And LeafGreen With A Level 100 Caterpie
This Reddit user goes by the name Anonimoo008, and recently shared their progress on the Pokemon subreddit earlier today. In their post, they share a screenshot of their victory over Lorelei, the first of the Elite Four, having taken her down with a single shiny Caterpie at max level. They go on to claim that it took them hours to accomplish.

Pokemon FireRed & LeafGreen: 7 Best Early Game Pokemon To Have And Where To Find Them
With plenty of Pokemon to choose from in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen, you should narrow down your choices early to start earning that EXP!
If you’re wondering exactly how they’re going about this feat, they have one strategy at the moment. Since Caterpie only learns Tackle and String Shot in Gen 3, the current method is spamming X-items and praying that the enemy Pokemon doesn’t hit them with a crit during that time. Once they’re souped up, they expend their moves and hit them with Struggle, which does a lot more damage than a regular Tackle and actually hits Ghost-type Pokemon, which the third Elite Four member — Agatha — uses a few of.
Fortunately, this challenge isn’t proving to be much of a… challenge for Anonimoo008, who reveals in the replies that he’s already managed to reach Lance, the fourth Elite Four member. Unfortunately, his Flamethrower-equipped Dragonite is proving to be a bit of a headache for our poor, plucky Caterpie, which constantly one shots the poor creature.
So, this challenge may end up being dropped as quickly as it started, unless Anonimoo008 finds a way to one shot a Dragonite with a Caterpie. Even then, they’d have their rival Blue to contend with, who comes packing with a Pidgeot, Rhydon, and an Arcanine or Charizard depending on what they chose as their starter Pokemon.
If Anonimoo008 managed to get past Dragonite, Blue would probably be a step too far, what with him having three Pokemon that Caterpie is weak against. Perhaps, he could open the challenge up to having more than a single Caterpie to work with, though I guess that would taint things a little bit. Either they’ll need a miracle, or they’ll have to get pretty creative from here on out.
