Pokemon Winds and Waves was officially revealed earlier today, giving us a nice tropical setting to explore when it launches in 2027. At the same time, it also revealed the game’s three starters – those being Growt, Pombon, and Gecqua — and I may have only known Pombon for a few hours, but if anything happens to him, I will crash out.
While I have no fears of Pombon having a horrible life or being taken out prematurely, there is one thing that could happen to him that not only has a history of happening in Pokemon games, but happens more often than not. Yes, I’m really hoping — along with a lot of other Pokemon fans — that Game Freak keeps Pombon on four legs and doesn’t make the poor little guy bipedal for his evolutions.
Please Game Freak, Don’t Lift Pombon’s Paws
We’ve seen Game Freak lift animals off the ground many times in the past, one of the most recent examples being Sprigatito in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. It’s starter looks adorable, only for Game Freak to make it bipedal in its second evolution. It happened with Litten in Pokemon Sun and Moon too, which was eventually lifted off its paws and turned into the pseudo-wrestler Incineroar. It’s also happened with Cyndaquil, Fennekin, and Tepig too. If it’s a starter based on an adorable animal, Game Freak will lift it off its feet.
Understandably, that’s become a tiring and somewhat annoying evolution trend that many want to see bucked in Pokemon Wind and Waves. In a Reddit post on the Pokemon subreddit showcasing the game’s starters, pretty much everyone on Team Pombon has their fingers crossed it keeps all four of its paws on the ground when it evolves, with one user called Recursion8 simply saying “Please let it stay quadruped please let it stay quadruped.”
It’s the same on Twitter too, with one user called LenVGC shouting “NO LEVANTES LAS PATAS” over and over again, which translates to “DON’T LIFT YOUR PAWS.” Some have already given up and just automatically assume that Pombon is going to turn into a buff bipedal Fire/Fighting type dog with a six-pack, which happened with the likes of Emboar and Blaziken.
There is some hope among Pokemon fans though. A lot of people seem to suspect that Gecqua would be a more fitting Pokemon to go bipedal, while others believe Game Freak should have Pombon just get floofier as it evolves, and eventually have it come a full-blown Fire-type Samoyed. That would undoubtedly be the best outcome, because Pombon is far too adorable right now to become a jacked wrestler. Let him stay on four feet Game Freak, otherwise the Pombon army come knocking down your door.
Unfortunately, it seems as tough we’ll be waiting a long while for more information regarding Pokemon Wind and Waves, which means the final evolutions for the three starters will be a mystery for now. I’d be surprised if the game was released outside of the holiday period, so we are possibly looking at the game being well over a year away still. That does give Game Freak more time to cook though, so here’s hoping Wind and Waves can buck the recent trend of dodgy Pokemon launches.
