Monster Hunter Wilds Player Claims Game Runs Worse On PC If You Own Less DLC

Despite selling ten million copies at launch, Monster Hunter Wilds was one of the biggest disappointments of 2025 for a lot of people. The latest entry in the Monster Hunter series has PC optimization problems that persist to this day, almost a year on from its release. However, one player thinks they may have found a fix for the problem, and if they’re right, it should be a relatively easy one for Capcom to make.

The problem appears to lie in Monster Hunter Wilds’ DLC, or rather, a lack of it. There are a lot of optional paid cosmetics in Wilds. Additional content that will cost you hundreds of dollars if you buy all of it. A large chunk of you probably haven’t bought any additional content, and only the smallest sliver of the Wilds community will have forked out for everything the newest Monster Hunter has to offer.

Monster Hunter Player Discovers Wilds Runs Better If You Own More DLC

Therein lies the potential problem, according to de_Tylmarande. The Monster Hunter fan shared their theory on Reddit, with evidence to back it up, suggesting that it’s the game searching for DLC, which, at least in part, is causing Wilds to run so poorly on PC.

de_Tylmarande created a mod that fools Wilds into thinking you have bought every paid cosmetic the game has to offer. With that mod in place, the DLC checks running in the background to see what you own end quickly. Without it, and with DLC missing, the checks continue, which, in theory, causes the game to run far more slowly.

Monster Hunter Wilds’ Reputation Is So Bad, One Japanese Retailer Is Selling It For 11 Cents

At 11 cents, it’s a steal, really.

That’s what this one player is hoping, at least, and they’ve claimed that, with the aforementioned mod installed, Wilds started to run better for them on PC than it ever has before. They claim that “performance went through the roof” without any additional CPU boost, and while running Wilds in balance mode. Check out the video below which compares performance with and without their mod installed.

The Player’s DLC Findings Have Been Submitted To Capcom

They also wanted to make it very clear that even though they used a mod that tricks Wilds into thinking they own all of the DLC, the mod doesn’t actually unlock anything. Everything that you typically have to pay for remains unavailable. They’ve also attempted to deter fellow Monster Hunters from replicating the process through fear that Capcom will catch wind of what they’ve done and get upset.

If what they’ve discovered really does work, though, Capcom will be far from upset. Not only have they sent their findings off to the Monster Hunter developers, but this isn’t the first time they’ve discovered something that might drastically improve one of the studio’s games. The Redditor previously fiddled with Dragon’s Dogma 2 in a similar way and sent their findings to Capcom a couple of years ago.
