Minecraft creator Notch has revealed that he agrees with the take that Creepers wouldn’t be added into the game nowadays since their “random destructive events” are “anti-fun”.
As anyone who has been screaming “Chicken Jockey” for the last few months is no doubt aware of, Minecraft is full of iconic mobs that have made a massive impact on the world of gaming. There’s no mob that’s quite as tied to Minecraft’s identity as the Creeper, though, and it’s been that way since it was created from a failed pig model and added to the game all the way back in 2009.
While the Creeper has basically become the poster child of Minecraft over the years, it’s become clear that developers working on the game don’t have the fondest opinion of it. Mojang chief creative officer Jens ‘Jeb’ Bergensten recently said that the team wouldn’t add the Creeper today because of how controversial it would be to have a mob capable of destroying something you’ve built.
Minecraft’s Creator Agrees That Creepers Shouldn’t Be Added To The Game Nowadays
Hiss All You Want, He’s Right
Perhaps unsurprisingly, Jeb’s comments were met with a lot of negativity from Minecraft players, in part because of how iconic the Creeper is, but also because of the general, frankly exaggerated view that Mojang is doing too much to make Minecraft as “safe” as possible. As it turns out, though, even Minecraft’s creator, Markus ‘Notch’ Alexej Persson, agrees with that stance.
Over on Twitter, Notch reacted to all of the hate that Jeb has been getting about the Creeper only being around “because it’s iconic”, and revealed that it’s actually an opinion he shares. Notch noted that he tried to “fix” the Creeper by making it explode as a result of a player’s inaction, since he realised random destruction was “anti-fun”.
I tried to fix the creeper by having it only explode as the result of player (in-)action, as I realized random destructive events you have no control over is anti-fun. – Notch
Although Notch has said some pretty divisive stuff about Minecraft in the past (as well as just generally, let’s be fair), hearing the same take about Creepers straight from the mouth of the creator seems to have gone down a little bit better. Even if Notch and Jeb agree, it doesn’t really change anything as the Creeper is clearly here to stay either way.
