Following the unexpected reveal of Mega Man: Dual Override at last year’s edition of The Game Awards, Capcom not only announced that the Blue Bomber in all his glory would be back at center stage, but so would one of the most iconic contests — the Robot Master Design Contest.
At the time, Dr. Wily called on fans to help him destroy Mega Man by crafting a “Robot Master who has a right arm with immense suction powers.”
Flash forward to today, and the Second Phase of the contest has commenced with 20 drawings that passed the first judging round being unveiled on Capcom’s own website. Users are encouraged to log in with their Capcom ID and vote on their favorites, with six finalists ultimately making the final cut.
The Robot Master Design Conteset is legendary on its own, but perhaps the coolest fact about its history is that mangaka Yusuke Murata is a two-time winner, having his designs in Mega Man 4 and 5. Murata would then go on to become the illustrator of Eyeshield 21 and One Punch Man.
In true Mega Man fashion, each of these Robot Masters has a unique name, ranging from Sanitize Man to Sweeper Woman. All of them have a powerful suction arm on the right side, and some even have a backstory included in the submission.
For instance, Osoji Man, or Design E on the website, is described by its artist as such: “A boss who loves keeping his stage perfectly clean. He wants to eliminate anything he considers to be foreign matter — especially MEGA MAN.”
His hair is a broom, and he has a cleaning face mask, as well as a backpack full of chemical spray.

Mega Man 5 is an original game that not enough people played. Now’s your chance to get in on this hidden gem.
Honestly, all these designs are a treat. It’s unfortunate that only six will make it to the final round. From there, Dual Override’s team will decide on the winner. All the six finalists will be in the in-game credits while the winner will, of course, have their design as part of the game itself.
Mega Man Is Coming Back In A Big Way With Dual Override
Long relegated to cameo duty and appearing in “Anniversary Collection” style compilations, Mega Man is getting his own solo adventure with Dual Override. There’s a good chance that Bass will be in the game, at least according to his VA, and the reveal trailer did have Proto Man’s whistle.
If that wasn’t enough, it was Capcom themselves that let Geoff Keighley know that it was time to re-reveal Mega Man to the world. Together, they came up with the orchestral reveal that fans experienced at The Game Awards.
There’s also a good chance that the fun doesn’t stop there, as Dual Override is reportedly just one of several “keystone” projects for the upcoming 40th anniversary. In the interim, the Star Force Legacy Collection is dropping on March 27.
