Marathon’s UI Is Giving Players An Early Headache

Marathon’s UI Is Giving Players An Early Headache

Life moves like the speed of light, and there’s no truer place for that than video games. One minute you’re watching a reveal trailer and the next a game is on the verge of releasing. Such is the case with Marathon, which went from being delayed indefinitely to now having a Server Slam weekend ahead of its official release on March 5.

Right now, thousands are jumping into Bungie’s latest venture, and for the most part, the early results seem positive. That said, if there’s one element that could use a refresh before release, it’s the UI.

Marathon Is Slow, Difficult, And Full Of Depth – But Who Is This Game For?

I’m having a good time with Marathon, but something about the game feels off.

Because, as it stands, it’s not very popular, leading to one content creator coining the term “Fontslop.”

While super creative, it is a bit busy, featuring several different sizes, colors and even fonts themselves.

“The UI has been my main turn-off so far,” one user wrote. “I’m willing to get used to the clunky movement and all the other things, but the UI and HUD are tiny and confusing. I’ve been getting frustrated and just grabbing the free loadouts to not deal with it or pay attention to it, which sucks because I’d like to learn it. I don’t think the game is for me. Cool art though.”

“The UI is straight up bad at conveying information,” another chimed in.

Whether the complaints are loud enough to force Bungie’s hand or if there is even any room before launch to adjust things remains to be seen. At the very least, we have a new “slop” word to add to our dictionaries.

Fontslop Hasn’t Stopped Marathon From Being An Early Winner

Highguard 2 or Concord 2 is not the fate Marathon will experience, at least judging by how things have gone so far during the Server Slam. The game nearly topped out at 150,000 players on Steam alone last night, with roughly 73,000 players currently engaging with the game at the time of writing, per SteamDB.

It’ll take a lot for Marathon to reach the peak of Arc Raiders (481,966) but it’s certainly not in danger of launching as a dud, either. For reference, Concord topped out at 697 players on Steam, and Highguard at 97,249, though many dipped out within minutes.
