Larian Studios Gives Small Divinity Spoiler: “Alligator”

Larian Studios Gives Small Divinity Spoiler: “Alligator”

Nearly a month after agreeing to do an AMA to help provide fans with “better insight” into Divinity, and its development process more “directly,” Larian Studios came through on its word with an extensive hours-long Q&A session on Reddit that provided a number of insights into everything from whether Baldur’s Gate 3 would end up on Switch 2 to the much-maligned use of Generative AI, which Larian states its backtracked on.

However, if there’s one minor thing that stands out among all the insights, it’s that Writing Director Adam Smith gave fans a one-word spoiler for Divinity, the next massive project from Larian, which was revealed during last month’s edition of The Game Awards.

When asked by a Redditor, “Is there any small spoiler you can give us that will sound completely nonsensical until we play the game?” Smith responded with something that will surely eat up at the minds of fans until Divinity does arrive.

“Alligator,” Smith succinctly wrote.

That’s it. That’s the word of the day — Alligator.

Divinity Interview with Swen Vincke

Larian Studios’ Swen Vincke On Divinity Following In The Early Access Footsteps Of Baldur’s Gate 3

After the global success of Baldur’s Gate 3, we sit down with Larian Studios founder Swen Vincke to talk all things Divinity.

Now, there are a number of ways this can go, and some fans have already begun putting their thinking caps on to try and figure out what it all means.

The Numbers Mason, What Do They Mean?

OK, we’ll get this out of the way first — one fan thinks that the “Alligator” being referenced by Smith is taking the place of the “Bear” that made waves with Baldur’s Gate 3. You know, the bear that you can screw.

Not for nothing, the highly-publicized “bear scene” was almost certainly extremely important to putting Baldur’s Gate 3 on the map, at least the mainstream map. Who’s to say an “alligator scene” won’t do the same?

Jokes aside, the “Alligator,” as PC Gamer noted in its write-up, could be referencing what we’ve yet to experience so far in any of these titles: the ability to swim.

That much was heavily hinted by head of design, Nick Pechenin, who noted that Divinity would let you do something that was largely missing in past games.

“There was something that bothered me when I explored the starting areas of DOS1, DOS2 and BG3,” the head wrote. “It stares you right in the face if you think about it. In Divinity, I can finally do the thing I wanted to do in every previous game.”

So while you’ll probably be able to swim better than an alligator ever could, what if the “Alligator” is an unfriendly creature that can absolutely shift an entire playthrough, and everyone will come to know it? That’s just conjecture, but we might be onto something.
