Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic has to be one of the most fumbled series of all time. Considered to be one of the best games of all time, we only ever got one sequel and an MMO to fill the void it left behind, and if you want to get into it now, there are no fancy remasters or remakes to get stuck into.
So, a fan has taken matters into their own hands and started creating a VR port in Unity. Reddit user BearableBastard has shared the results so far, showing us some of the opening mission in KOTOR, and how this VR remake handles combat and the various weapons in the game.
This KOTOR Fan Has Made The Prologue Playable In VR
“I posted a video last year of Taris but it didn’t really show anything other than blocking projectiles with a lightsaber. I’ve made improvements and a [lot] of progress in the past few months,” the creator explains. “Right now the biggest hurdle is animations and getting them to play correctly without deforming the NPCs.”
As we can see here, there has indeed been a lot of progress. We see the player test out various weapons, which would have had to be tweaked to work in VR rather than KOTOR’s usual combat mechanics. Right now, it looks great, and even works when up against NPCs in combat.

Society Has Moved Beyond The Need For A KOTOR Remake
What we need is a spiritual successor.
The level of work that’s gone into this really cannot be overstated. Even speaking as a layman here, I can see that lightsabers work very differently in this build, since we can actually swing them around ourselves. In KOTOR, we just hit buttons to perform certain attacks with them and any other weapons we get our hands on. Better yet, we see the player swing their lightsaber to deflect blaster bullets. That’s something our characters did automatically in KOTOR, but now, it relies on our own skill and timing.
Another neat feature is that it looks like we can destroy the environments around us. We get a glimpse of this when the player has the lightsaber out and uses it to break a box. If the developer sticks with that feature, then that’s another new addition to the original game.
Force powers are here too. It’s hard to see how they are activated, but we do see them being chosen in a menu and then deployed in battle. Being able to actually shoot lightning from your hands or force push someone with the flick of a wrist looks cool as hell, it has to be said.
In the meantime, KOTOR Remake continues to be a no-show, but we’re getting an official spiritual successor with Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic.
