Mutant hordes are a lot easier to deal with when you are not the only one getting chased across the map. John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando leans hard into co-op fun, as it throws squads into missions with undead and plenty of opportunities to accidentally run over your friends with a vehicle. Naturally, that experience gets a lot better once you know how to get everyone into the same lobby.
Between invite codes, cross-platform play, bot teammates, and voice chat settings, there are a few multiplayer features worth understanding before dropping into a mission. If you are trying to squad up with buddies or just figure out how the game’s co-op works, this guide will walk through everything you need to know.
How Does Multiplayer Work?
Multiplayer missions are designed for a four-player squad. The game features four different classes that you can choose from, which allows each squad member to fill a different role during missions.
If you are not playing with a full group of four players, the remaining slots in your squad will automatically be filled with AI teammates.
For example, if you are playing with one friend, the other two spots will be taken by bots. If you are playing solo, the game will fill the other three squad positions with AI companions so you can still run missions with a full team.
The game also includes built-in voice chat to help coordinate during missions. You can enable voice chat in the Audio Settings menu and choose how it works for you. You can switch between open mic or push to talk depending on your preference.
How To Invite Friends
To invite friends, open the main menu during gameplay (Esc on PC). From there, select the Social option to access multiplayer and friend features. Inside the Social menu, choose Show Invite Code. The game will generate a unique invite code tied to your current session.
Share this code with the friend you want to play with. On their end, they will need to open the Social menu as well and select Join by Code. After entering the invite code you sent them, they will be connected to your lobby and join your session.
Is There Crossplay?
Yes, John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando supports full crossplay between PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. This is possible thanks to the invite code system used in the game’s Social menu, which allows players on different platforms to join the same session without needing to be on the same system.
Crossplay works automatically when you join online matches or invite friends using a code. As long as players enter the correct invite code, they can connect to the same lobby regardless of the platform they are playing on. Alternatively, you can turn off crossplay in the gameplay settings.
Players on PC can also play together even if they are using different storefronts. Both Steam and Epic Games Store users can join the same multiplayer sessions without any extra setup.
