After defeating Darkrai in Pokemon Legends: Z-A‘s Mega Dimension DLC, you’ll have a bit of post-game to enjoy, where you’ll focus on catching Rayquaza. During this time, you’ll also gain access to the last few Side Missions available in the DLC, one of which is The Ultimate Techniques.
The Ultimate Techniques Side Mission will require you to use each of the Legends: Z-A starters in a battle against other starters that are super-effective against them. It’s undoubtedly one of the most challenging NPC Side Missions in the game, but the rewards are certainly worth it.
Side Mission 186: The Ultimate Techniques
Arcannes, the woman presenting you with the Side Mission, will have three separate trials you’ll need to complete to finish the Side Mission. You’ll need to complete the Trial of Grass, Trial of Fire, and Trial of Water. In each one, you’ll be required to use the Legends: Z-A starter of that type, which would be Meganium, Emboar, and Feraligatr.
Your opponents for each trial will be the other starters in Legends: Z-A that are super-effective against you. So, for example, if you do the Trial of Grass and go in with Meganium, you’ll be facing Charizard, Blaziken, and Delphox. To make matters worse, not only will you be at a disadvantage type-wise, but you can only have the starter in your party, no backups, and all your opponents will be level 99.
For each of these fights, you need to use Protect. You’re at a type disadvantage, which means you’re going to be taking some potential one-hit KOs, so being able to protect yourself from those is going to be crucial since you have no backup Pokemon.
None of your opponents will Mega Evolve, despite having Mega Evolutions.
Secondly, you’re going to want to buff your starter Pokemon up. This means hyper-training IVs, training EVs, and leveling up to 100. You’ll also want to try to make sure all of your moves are + moves, so you take full advantage of them. Finally, the last thing you want to do for all three battles is stock up on healing items, especially Full Restore, since you’re likely to end up with status ailments.
The Trial Of Grass
For the Trial of Grass, you’ll be required to use Meganium, and your opponents will be Charizard, Blaziken, and Delphox. Every single one will start this battle with Blast Burn, the fire starter Signature Move, so the first thing you’ll want to do is Protect as soon as you see the flames. Following that, it’ll be different depending on who you’re battling.
Charizard, unfortunately, is immune to Ground, but it’s great for both Blaziken and Delphox. So, depending on whether you have a Physical or Special Meganium, you’ll want to have either Earthquake or Earth Power. Additionally, Fire resists Fairy, so Mega Evolving isn’t going to do much for you here.
That said, you can still use it for an overall boost; the type of change just won’t have any impact. Of the three trials, this is the only one where you can still win with roughly the same amount of effort without using the Mega Stone. If you don’t already have the Mega Stone or plan on getting it, it’s not worth the cost just for this trial.
The following is one of the recommended move sets for Meganium, based on personal experience:
|
Meganium |
|
|---|---|
|
Moves |
Earth Power (Special)/Earthquake (Physical), Leech Seed/Synthesis, Outrage, and Protect |
|
Item |
Meganiumite Mega Stone (or Focus Sash) |
If you don’t have the Mega Stone and want it, you can purchase it from the Item Shop on Vernal Avenue for 100,000 Pokemon Dollars.
The Trial Of Water
For the Trial of Water, you’ll be required to use Feraligatr, and your opponents will be Venusaur, Sceptile, and Chesnaught. This fight can be tougher than the others, purely because your first opponent, Venusaur, has several moves that heal it. So, if you’re unable to deal with it quickly, then you might find yourself in a rough position.
Thankfully, Feraligatr’s Mega gives it Dragon typing as well, so when Mega Evolved, Feraligatr will gain STAB damage for Outrage. While using Meganium’s Mega Stone isn’t going to change as much in the Grass Trial, Feraligatr’s Mega Stone is highly recommended for the aforementioned reason.
Like the Grass Trial, your opponents are going to come out and immediately use the Grass signature move, Frenzy Plant, so you’ll want to use Protect right away and mainly save it for that move specifically. Otherwise, you’ll primarily want to spam Outrage and Ice Fang as much as you can.

The Trial Of Fire
For The Trial of Fire, you’ll be required to use Emboar, and your opponents will be Blastoise, Swampert, and Greninja. Thankfully, Emboar has the widest move pool options of the three starters, so you can actually equip some super-effective moves to use against the water-types you have to fight.
As with the other two Trials, Protect will be your first go-to since all opponents will be opening with Hydro Cannon. You’ll want to save Protect specifically for that move. Beyond that, you’ll want to use Trailbaze initially with all of them. From there, alternate with Thunder Punch to deal with Blastoise, and alternate with Close Combat to deal with Swampert and Greninja.

Trailblaze is one of the TMs that must be purchased from the Secret TM Vendor in an alley in Lumiose, in exchange for Mega Shards.
Pokemon Legends: Z-A – Mega Dimension: Legendary Pokemon Guide
As was expected, several Legendary and Mythical Pokemon are waiting for you in the Mega Dimension Post-Game of Pokemon Legends: Z-A.
How To Unlock The Frenzy Plant, Blast Burn, and Hydro Cannon TMs
You will earn the TM for that starter after each trial. So, you won’t need to complete the Side Mission to receive all three TMs at once. After you complete one trial, Arcannes will go ahead and reward you with the move for that starter.
So, The Trial of Grass will award Frenzy Plant, The Trial of Fire will award Blaze Burn, and The Trial of Water will award Hydro Cannon. Once you’ve finished all three, you’ll be rewarded with 10,000 Pokemon Dollars for completing the Side Mission.
