How To Prepare For And Defeat Guillotina In Mewgenics

Mewgenics is here at last to fill that grotesque and challenging hole in your soul that may have been formed after years of silence from the creators behind The Binding of Isaac and Super Meat Boy. And, now that they have united to make the ultimate turn-based strategy roguelike, you can expect even more horrors and challenges than ever before, and it’s excellent.

And one of these challenges will be Guillotina, a massive cat who prowls the night, looking for other cats to devour and fill its filthy belly. While that’s bad enough on its own, once you’re made aware of this beast of a cat, you will only have seven in-game days to prepare for its arrival, and you’d best take it seriously, or all your adorable cats are toast!

After clearing the Boneyard stage and unlocking Act Two in Mewgenics, you will be made aware of Guillotina and will be given seven days to prepare adequately for its arrival. The catch? You can only use four of your Retired cats to fend off this ferocious beast of a cat.

To take down Guillotina, you will not only need a solid strategy, but you will also need some strong units that can stand toe-to-toe with her in combat. For this, we strongly recommend having a Cleric, Hunter, Tank, and Thief, as this blend of Classes will give you the most chance of survival, as you have tremendous damage output, defense, and the ability to heal when needed.

Furthermore, if you have a Thief with the ability to buff its backstabs and teleport behind enemies, you will be more than golden, as you can continually warp behind Guillotina, backstab her, and then move far away from her, rinsing and repeating until she’s bested. A solid Hunter will also work wonders, allowing them to deal substantial damage to the beast from a safe distance, while the Tank stands their ground on the front lines and the Cleric heals anyone that needs it!

Keeping Your Retired Cats Safe

Looking at the Junk Chair furnishing for the house, which grants +1 Comfort and Stimulation in Mewgenics.

Okay, if you have Retired cats with unbelievable abilities and skills, keep them safe at all costs. As you’re likely already aware, your cats can get into fierce fights with one another when you end the night, which can lead to one outright killing the other, which isn’t ideal when ol’ Guillotina is heading your way.

So, how do you keep them safe? Purchasing furniture from Baby Jack and placing it in your house can increase your cat’s Comfort levels, making it less likely for them to get into fights at night, and the same goes for having fewer cats in a room as well. Each room of your house also has its own stats, so we strongly recommend placing your best Retired cats in the same room and trying your best to keep their Comfort levels in check to ensure they survive long enough for the big battle against Guillotina!

Complete More Runs

The Lazy Fluffers returning home from a successful expedition in Mewgenics.

While the encroaching threat of Guillotina is of utmost importance, don’t take any days off and try to do a run with new units every single day leading up to the big showdown. Not only can you obtain tremendously powerful items to use against her, but you can level up more units and get even better ones that will help you defeat her.

Outside of that, you can clear more stages and earn more Collars, which could be a class that fits your playstyle or needs, such as the Necromancer or Druid. While we recommended specific classes earlier, if they aren’t really your playstyle, by all means, build up your favorites within the allotted week and defend your base and cats with your preferred playstyle!

How To Defeat Guillotina

All the units celebrating after defeating Guillotina in Mewgenics.

As you likely assumed by this point in the game, Guillotina’s strengths go hand-in-hand with her gimmicks, as she only has about three moves to work with, which is par for the course when it comes to bosses in Mewgenics. However, what makes her a bit different than the others is her staggeringly high health pool at 500 HP, and her ability to act frequently each round, letting her attack about three times per round.

She’s quite quick, deals lots of damage, and has tons of health, so she won’t be easy to take down. Fortunately, with the right team setup, you can do some serious damage and end things relatively quickly, so long as you can keep your Cleric safe and sound!

Guillotina – Butt Slam

Guillotina performing a devastating Butt Slam on the Thief cat, pushing them back into the wall for even more damage in Mewgenics.

First attack in Gullotina’s docket is her Butt Slam, having her be able to leap from her current tile to another tile in a large AoE around herself, essentially allowing her to land on anyone she pleases. If she lands on your units, they will be launched several tiles backward diagonally and take substantial damage, making unit placement crucial to keep in mind to avoid them from bumping into one another.

Not even tall grass will save you here, as you just sort of have to take this attack when she decides to use it. However, staying clear of the stage walls and your own teammates will help keep the damage from getting too out of control. Do not place your units diagonally from one another, and avoid being too close to the walls if you can!

Guillotina – Toss

Guillotina tossing the Tank cat across the arena, dealing considerable damage to them in Mewgenics.

Next up is her Toss action, which has her pick up the nearest unit and hurl it to another tile anywhere in the arena. This can be your cats, a flea, a maggot, you name it, and it can be thrown. While throwing your units will always deal decent damage to them, when Guillotina throws another item, it won’t always hit you, so you will mostly be safe from that unless she locks in for that particular throw.

To avoid Guillotina from throwing you too much, don’t end your turn directly beside her, as that’s when she will largely prioritize this action. You can also go into the tall grass, increasing the odds of her whiffing the action, allowing you to attack her with ease on your next turn!

Guillotina – Inhale

Following that, we have her Inhale, which has her suck in one of your units into her mouth, taking them off the battlefield. Once inside, you must wait until it’s that unit’s turn, then attempt to ‘Flail’ to make it out, which only has a 25 percent success rate. Successfully cutting your way out will deal five damage to Guillotina, but you will also take two damage when you land, but you will be able to move and use your abilities immediately after.

This action of hers is far-reaching and cannot be countered, so you must accept your fate and be consumed. Fortunately, it’s easy enough to break out of her restraints. This move is meant to slow your damage output, dragging the fight out a bit longer, which can be a recipe for disaster if you’re not the patient type!

Guillotina – Claw Slash

Guillotina performing a Claw Slash on the Tank and Thief cats, pushing them back two tiles in Mewgenics.

From here, we have her Claw Slash attack, having Guillotina execute a devastating swipe with her massive paw, sending her target backward a considerable distance. This is a rare move of hers, and thankfully for that, as it’s easily her most potent. She only performed this attack a single time in our encounter against her, but your mileage may vary, so be on the lookout for it, as you do not want to be on the receiving end of too many of these.

Hiding in tall grass can make this attack whiff, as your evasion is greatly increased. Other than that, we strongly recommend not placing your units directly behind one another, as you risk colliding and causing further damage. Again, it’s a rare attack, but a very strong one, so try your best to avoid it at all costs!

Guillotina – Enraged

Guillotina becoming enraged once her health reaches a certain threshold, having her restore 50 HP and become a bit more aggressive in Mewgenics.

Lastly, we have Guillotina’s ‘Enraged’ state, which is less of an attack and more of a state she enters after you drop her HP down roughly halfway. Once she gets to this state, she will let out a roar, replenish 50 HP, and become a bit more aggressive, meaning she attacks more frequently. Outside of that, she’s more or less the same, so keep doing what you’ve been doing, and she’ll be defeated in no time.

For this entire fight, we strongly recommend keeping your Hunter near the spawn, maybe even in the tall grass, to keep them out of Guillotina’s warpath and allow them to snipe her from a safe distance. Have your Thief teleport behind her, deliver a massive backstab, and move into the tall grass to avoid her more devastating attacks. Try keeping your Tank up close and personal, using your Cleric to heal them if needed!
