Although Nioh has always been intensely focused on its combat above all else, that’s not all there is to the series, as each game also has plenty of things to hunt down. Nioh 3 is no exception.
Just like the last two games in the series, one of the most important things you’ll have to track down in Nioh 3 are Kodama, friendly little spirits who offer you rewards for sending them home.
How To Find Kodama And What They Do
Kodama are one of three discoverable friendly spirits in Nioh 3, and they’re tiny green creatures who often wear pots and pans on their heads. They’re scattered around each of Nioh 3’s time periods and have to be interacted with to send them home. You’ll be able to more easily find them by listening for their telltale squeaking noise.
You’ll be able to see the general location of Kodama on the map once you reach Exploration Level 4, but the bonuses are so good it’s worth getting them as early as possible with this guide.
Once you’ve sent a Kodama back to its home, you’ll not only increase your Exploration Level, but also gain Kodama Merit to spend on some minor stat upgrades in the Kodama Blessing menu, such as the effectiveness of Elixirs. These upgrades quickly add up to being quite helpful, so they’re more than worth the effort. Here’s how to find every Kodama in the game’s first period, Warring States.
We’ll be going in order of the recommended level for each area in the game, as that’s likely the order you’ll explore.
RELATED
Every Tenryu River Kodama
The first Kodama can be found hiding in an Enemy Base, which you’ll need to clear before rescuing the little guy. |
Tenryu River’s second Kodama is located on top of a big rock, next to a Torii gate and an inactive shrine. |
The third Kodama in Tenryu Hill can be found sitting inside one of the little huts in the village. You can get into the hut by dropping in via a hole in the roof. |
The fourth and final Tenryu River Kodama is found inside of a well. Hit the rock next to the well to send the Kodama shooting up. |
Every Tokaido Kodama
The first Tokaido Kodama is found sitting in the middle of a lake near an inactive shrine. Just don’t fall into the water! |
Next up, Tokaido’s second Kodama is found inside an enemy base. It’s right next to a locked chest and a fence. |
The final Kodama in Tokaido is right next to a massive tree and a few enemies who you’ll need to take out before you send them home. |
Every Hamamatsu Kodama
Hamamatsu’s first Kodama is located right as you enter the region, and it’s inside a house. You might need to jump the fence to find the only entrance to the house. |
The second Kodama is also inside of a house, but it’s later on in the village and in the upstairs room next to an enemy. |
One of the first well-hidden Kodama in the game is hiding in a well on the left side of the village. Hit the rock, and you’ll get the Kodama. |
You’ll need to make it a bit further to the castle to find the fourth and final Hamamatsu Kodama. You’ll find this Kodama near some haystacks to the right of the castle. I’d recommend going for this one once you’ve cleared the castle out. |
Every Maisaka Kodama
The first Kodama of Maisaka is found inside a hut near the Water Mill. You’ll need to defeat the nearby enemies to be able to save it. |
Get used to hearing this, but the second Kodama of Maisaka is found in the Haunted Caves. Shortly after the Chamber of Enlightenment Shrine, head forward and crouch under a rock. Then jump to your right, and you’ll find the Kodama just above you. |
We’re sticking to the Haunted Caves for this next Kodama. Make your way through the cave until you reach some rocks with green pools to climb upwards. This will lead you to another level, where you can go left and follow the path to the Kodama. You’ll know you’re in the right place since the Chamber of Enlightenment Shrine will be to your left behind some rocks. |
The final Kodama of Maisaka is also found in the Haunted Caves, which means we can nearly leave this place behind for good. Beyond the Rimstone Pool Shrine, head to the right side of the caves to find the Kodama. |
Every Lake Sanaru Kodama
The first two Kodama are both found near the pirate ship, close to the Waterside Shrine. The first Kodama is actually found on a little boat to the left of the ship, which you can reach by jumping from boat to boat. |
The second Kodama of Lake Sanaru is found on the actual pirate ship itself, near the back of the ship. Remember that this is an enemy base, so you’re better off killing the enemies before sending it home. |
Moving away from the pirate ship, the third Kodama is found at Maisaka Post, which you’ll need to reach with the wallrun traversal ability. Maisaka Post is basically a little platforming gauntlet, and the Kodama is waiting at the end for you on its own little island. |
The final Lake Sanaru Kodama is close to the Lake Sanaru (North) Shrine. Head forward from here and then go to the right when there’s a fork in the road. The Kodama is waiting near a cart and some enemies. |
Every Mikatagahara Kodama
The first Kodama in Mikatagahara is located right near the Saigagake Bridge Shrine. Once here, head to the left and drop down to the rocks below to find the Kodama. |
Saigaka is where you’ll find the next few Kodama. The one shown on the map above can be found sitting on top of the gate, although you’ll have to climb a bit and reach the Main Hall Shrine before you can help it get home. |
The third Kodama is found in the same area of Saigaka with all the wooden planks to climb on. Platform your way up to the top and you’ll see it sitting on a wooden plank, on the left and above the Main Hall Shrine. |
After all that platforming, the fourth Kodama is a nice change of pace since it’s fairly easy to find. From the Rear Approach Shrine, head forward and then left. Before reaching the doors to Takeda Shingen’s fight, go left again to see the Kodama being bullied by an enemy. |
Moving on from Saigaka, the fifth Mikatagahara Kodama is found right next to the Hamamatsu Hill border. Once you reach the area marked above, look to the right to see a pile of hay, which the Kodama is right near. |
The next Kodama is found right after the Kikyo Bellflower Fortress Shrine. Head into the fortress, and then immediately climb up the first rock you see to your right to find the Kodama. |
This Kodama is surprisingly tricky to find. Further on in the Kikyo Belltower Fortress, you’ll see a ruined shack. The Kodama is behind that, so head through the hut and it’s crouch passage to reach it. |
Every Hamamatsu Hill Kodama
The first Hamamatsu Hill Kodama can be found close to the Mikatagahara Junction Shrine. From here, you’ll need to reach the temple above you, where you’ll find the Kodama sitting on the edge of the cliff. |
Kodama number two is located near Juji Fortress (North). Head into the Fortress and go to the right to find the Kodama. |
The final Kodama of Hamamatsu Hill is located right near the border of Futamata Road. You’ll find the Kodama in a hut near an enemy base. |
Every Lake Hamana Kodama
Every Iinoya Kodama
The first Kodama of the Warring State’s most Kodama-infested area is located right near the Temple Ruins – Cemetery Shrine. You’ll find him right before the cemetery itself, in a little forest area. |
To get this next Kodama, it’s easier to spawn from the Iinoya Pass Shrine, since he’s located outside of the cemetery. From here, head down the forest until you see a large set of stairs on the right. The Kodama is found near a fence at the top of the stairs. |
For this third Kodama, we’ll need to double back to the Temple Ruins – Cemetery Shrine. From here, unlock the door on the right (which you can do by making progress through the Cemetery) and then climb up the tower to find the Kodama. |
We can finally move away from the Cemetery for the fourth Kodama, which is smack bang in the middle of the area. It’s a little annoying to get to, but if you use the Great Ginkgo Approach Shrine near an enemy base it makes things easier. From here, make your way into the forest to find the Kodama near a hut. |
Kodama number five of Iinoya (halfway there now, don’t worry!) is close to the Omomiji Junction Shrine. Follow the long path here until you reach some Yokai. Climb the logs and then the rock to find the Kodama at the top. |
The next five Kodama are all located in Ryotan Temple, so get used to the area. The first Kodama of the area is found near the entrance into the castle and to the East. You’ll find a series of buildings here, and the Kodama is near a bonsai tree. |
Kodama number seven is found a little further on from the last, in an outside area with a garden and bridge. The Kodama is underneath the bridge, and you can get under there through a crack on the left side. |
Keep going through the garden and up a ladder to reach the next Kodama who is a bit further on. Jump down after the ladder and you’ll see a hole that you can crawl under to reach the Kodama. |
The ninth and nearly last Kodama in Iinoya is found outside in a garden to the West of the Living Quarters Shrine. |
We’re finally here, the last Iinoya Kodama! This one is located in on the Western outskirts of the Temple. Head close to where we found Kodama number nine, and then climb up the rocks to reach the Kodama. |
Every Futamata Road Kodama
The first Kodama of Futumata Road is right near the Silver Meadow Shrine. Head over the bridge and to the left to find the Kodama on top of the rock. Just be warned, there’s a tough boss here you’ll need to beat first. |
We’ll need to backtrack a bit and towards Tenryu River from the Silver Meadow Shrine to reach the second Kodama. Head back and you’ll find it sitting next to a hut. |
The last Kodama is found in the Firefly Forest, one of my least favourite areas of the game. From the area’s dedicated Shrine, head to the area marked above and defeat all the annoying enemies on the way. When you get close to the water’s edge, you’ll see a big branch above you that you can climb to find the Kodama. |
Every Futamata Kodama
To kick off the final round of Kodama, we’ll start from the Cavern of Respite Shrine, since that’s likely where you’ll reach Futamata. From here, head down to the right and down towards Tealeaf Village. While at the area shown above, hop on top of the hut to reach the Kodama. |
Kodama number two of Futamata is found near the Castle Town Shrine. Head across the bridge and towards a hut, and you’ll see the Kodama. Just make sure to take care of any enemies nearby. |
The next two Kodama are found right next to each other past the Riverside Shrine. Follow the path until you’re past the gunmen and inside the castle’s walls. Go through the building and make your way around until you see the Kodama behind a fence. You’ll need to go past a fake wall to be able to send it home. |
To reach the next Kodama, you’ll have to go through another firing path and climb back up to the castle’s walls. The Kodama is sitting in one of the horse paddocks, near where you can kick some logs down to make the runback easier. |
The fifth Kodama is found past the Koguchi Junction Shrine, a bit further on in the area. This Kodama is found behind a stack of hay, so go through the first building and then circle back to the left to see it. |
Once again, the next two Kodama are fairly close to one another. From Koguchi Junction Shrine, head up the stairs and you’ll see a destroyed structure. The Kodama is hiding in a corner of that, which you can reach by hopping over. |
The next Kodama is right nearby, on top of the roof of the destroyed structure, but you’ll need to go further on in the area and then circle back around and to the left in order to reach it. |
