While playing Hytale, you will probably be doing plenty of crafting and upgrading. To do this, you need all sorts of resources like leather, iron, and linen scraps. One recourse that causes a bit of confusion, though, is Darkwood.
This is because there is no singular item in the game called Darkwood. It’s more of a category of wood, rather than a type. What you’re actually looking for are Cedar Logs, which are a type of Darkwood. Here is a guide to finding and using them.
Hytale is an early access game, so some of this information may change in the future.
Where To Find Darkwood
To acquire Darkwood, you need to seek out Cedar Log trees. You can find them in the Whisperfrost Frontiers zone, which is a place known for being quite cold and snowy.
The exact location of the Whisperfront Frontiers zone won’t necessarily be the same for everyone. Just look for snowy areas on your map.
One of the most identifying features of these trees is their blue leaves. It isn’t the only type of tree with leaves that color, but most of the rest have green leaves, so it is something to look for. In fact, you can actually use the map to seek out blue trees since they’re the same color on there.
The trees are also really tall and have brown pinecones growing between the leaves.
When you find one of these trees, you cut it down the same way as any other by using a hatchet.

You can’t just stick with a broken crude sword for the entire game.
Uses Of Darkwood
As mentioned earlier, Darkwood is sometimes needed to upgrade Workbenches to higher tiers. Yet, the main usage of Darkwood is to build things with it.
With the help of a Builder’s Workbench, you can make all sorts of wooden items. And the wood lives up to its Darkwood name, as they’re all a darker color than those made out of other woods.
Here is everything you can make at the Builder’s Workbench with Darkwood:
