Like many other creatures appearing in Pokemon Legends: Z-A through the Mega Dimension DLC, getting Overqwil can be tricky for those not in the know, and even more so because catching its pre-evolution — Hisuian Qwilfish — is incredibly challenging.
Much like when trying to find a Feebas to evolve into Milotic, Pokemon in this DLC have certain spawn requirements along with unique evolution methods. With this quick and simple walkthrough guide, though, you’ll not only be able to find Hisuian Qwilfish in the Mega Dimension DLC, but you’ll soon know exactly what to do to add Overqwil to your Pokemon Legends: Z-A Pokedex as well.
How To Get Overqwil
With the Mega Dimension DLC installed, Overqwil can rarely be found in five-star Hyperspace Wild Zones with Poison and/or Dark typing, but the easiest way to get the Pin Cluster Pokemon in Legends: Z-A is by evolving a Hisuian Qwilfish; this can happen after you’ve had one use the move Barb Barrage 20 times.
However, you’ll need to catch Hisuian Qwilfish first. While Hisuian Qwilfish is a more common spawn than Overqwil, it is still incredibly rare, and there are some key conditions to keep in mind.

To find Spoink in Pokemon Legends: Z-A, with the Mega Dimension DLC, here is exactly how to find it and get its evolution, Grumpig.
How To Get Hisuian Qwilfish
Outside of trading with those who’ve already caught one in Pokemon Legends: Z-A’s Mega Dimension DLC, the only way to get a Hisuian Qwilfish is by finding and catching one in three-star Hyperspace Wild Zones that are Poison- and/or Dark-type — the same type requirements as Overqwil.
Similar to tracking Golett in Legends: Z-A, three-star Hyperspace Wild Zones unlock once you’ve started ‘Hyperspace Mission 08: Hyperspace Lumiose Survey No.4’ in the Mega Dimension DLC’s campaign; this will take you around five to seven hours from the beginning of the expansion’s storyline.
On your Lumiose City map, check any Hyperspace Wild Zones meeting those conditions and look out for Hisuian Qwilfish’s unique silhouette: a round ball-like shape with spikes poking out of its whole body. If such a Wild Zone with Hisuian Qwilfish hasn’t appeared, you’ll need to perform a bench re-reroll until one does appear.
How To Get Qwilfish
If it’s Water-type Generation Two Qwilfish you’re after in Pokemon Legends: Z-A’s Mega Dimension DLC, these can be found in two-star Hyperspace Wild Zones with Water and/or Poison typing.
These still may require some trial and error, but the Water-type Qwilfish are thankfully much more common than the Hisuian variant.
Making Hisuian Qwilfish’s Hyperspace Wild Zone Spawn
If you’re struggling to make Hisuian Qwilfish spawn in Pokemon Legends: Z-A, the quickest way to make one appear within the Mega Dimension DLC is by continuously re-rerolling spawns by resting at a bench — using the ‘Kill some time here’ option.
The best bench we’d recommend for re-rolls is the one next to the Nouveau Cafe (where Grisham works), right by Wild Zone 20. It’s not only one of the most central spots, but there is a bench you can immediately find right behind you, right after fast traveling.
This refreshes your entire map, including all of the spawned Hyperspace Wild Zones and Battle Zones, with every new day and night cycle, and resting at a bench generates. The simple formula you need to follow is ‘rest, check map, and repeat’ until Qwilfish appears.
The most important thing to keep in mind, however, is that Hisuian Qwilfish is one of the rarest additions to Legends: Z-A from the Mega Dimension DLC — just as rare as Mimikyu, if not more. For us, it took over 200 bench re-rolls over six hours (casually with breaks in between) for us to finally find a Hyperspace Wild Zone with Hisuian Qwilfish that spawned.
This all comes down to luck, though, so you’ll likely find one far faster; still, if you do end up hunting for this length of time with no success, just remember one will appear. It can just take a lot of trial and error.
How To Catch Hisuian Qwilfish
In these three-star Hyperspace Wild Zones of the Mega Dimension DLC for Legends: Z-A, Hisuian Qwilfish will spawn at Level 133 or 134; this variant of Qwilfish is a Poison- and Dark-type hybrid, so use Ground-type attacks for super-effective damage (Garchomp with Earthquake is our go-to) to sweep a few at a time.
Hisuian Qwilfish’s catch rate isn’t too high, but be sure to use Ultra Balls to safely catch as many as possible. If it’s nighttime in Lumiose City, when entering the Wild Zone, Dusk Balls work great as a backup as well.
To give yourself plenty of time and to make the battles for your Pokemon easier, remember to have Hoopla eat a three-star Donut to enter. Even at the point in the game where you only unlock three-star zones, there are plenty of easy Donut recipes in Mega Dimension that you can use.
When caught, the Level 133-134 Hisuian Qwilfish will translate to Level 23-24 in the Legends: Z-A main game in regular Lumiose.
How To Evolve Hisuian Qwilfish Into Overqwil Quickly
After catching a Hisuian Qwilfish in Mega Dimension, you can unlock its evolution into Overqwil by having it use Barb Barrage 20 times either in battle or in Legends: Z-A’s overworld (like destroying Mega Shard clusters throughout Lumiose City); the fastest way to accomplish this, though, is by attacking one of the training dummies at the Justice Dojo.
Located east of Wild Zone 20 and southwest of Wild Zone 8, the Justice Dojo is the training grounds for Ivor’s Fist of Justice faction, which is also where you can turn in Bottle Caps for Hyper Training your Pokemon.
At the left and right beyond the Justice Dojo’s entrance, you’ll find two training dummies that you can attack as normal, but can take infinite damage without being destroyed. By using these Legends: Z-A training dummies to grind Barb Barrage on, you’ll be able to evolve Hisuian Qwilfish into Overqwil much faster by not having to waste time looking for new targets or trainers to battle.
If caught at Level 23-24, like it was for us, your Hisuian Qwilfish won’t know Barb Barrage yet because it unlocks the move at Level 28. To level it up fast, you can either use Rare Candies or one Exp. Candy L to get yours to Level 28 in one fell swoop.
From start to finish, keeping Barb Barrage’s cooldown time in mind, we were able to use the move 20 times in around three minutes and 50 seconds, and unlock Hisuian Qwilfish’s evolution into Overqwil. Be sure to keep track of how many times you’ve used the attack, since you won’t be notified that Hisuain Qwilfish’s evolution will be unlocked until you go into the menu and see the big and bright evolution arrow next to it.
Select Hisuian Qwilfish, select ‘Evolve’, confirm your choice, and it shall evolve so you’ll finally have Overqwil in your Legends: Z-A collection of Mega Dimension Pokemon.
