How To Defeat the Omega Griever In Metroid Prime 4: Beyond

Suit up bounty hunters, because Metroid Prime 4: Beyond has officially been released. With a new hostile alien planet to explore, a mystery to unravel, and plenty of creatures trying to tear you apart, it can be a hostile world for newcomers to the Metroid Prime franchise.

One of the toughest enemies you’ll face in the entire game is the Omega Griever. A boss located in the depths of the Great Mine, this foe can not only hinder your movements, but also deal a comical amount of damage if you cannot avoid his plethora of attacks. Here’s what you need to know to conquer this boss and claim your last Teleporter Key.

How To Defeat The Omega Griever

Before we get into actually taking down the Omega Griever, it’s important to first know what this boss can actually do. Here’s a full list of all this boss’s attacks throughout the fight.

Attack

Description

Claw Swipes

The Omega Griever swipes at you two times in front of him with his claws.

Ground Pound

He raises his arms over his head, howls, and slams the ground, creating a rocky shock wave. The Omega Greiver will increase the number of shockwaves the lower his health gets.

Acid Wave

After recovering from being stunned, the Omega Griever will fire a wave of acidic slime in front of him.

Acid Balls

While on the wall, the Omega Griever fires up to 5 acidic orbs at the player.

Tongue Grab

Attempting to grab the player, the Omega Griever launches its long tongue at you. If it latches on, you’ll slowly take damage and be reeled in towards its mouth, which will deplete a lot of health.

Pounce

He jumps across the arena in an attempt to crush you underneath. The number of pounces increases as he loses health.

Giant Acid Ball

After losing over 50 percent health, the Omega Griever will occasionally form a massive ball of acid over its head and throw it at you.

Acid Beam

After losing over 50 percent health, the Omega Griever will launch a beam of acid and rotate a full 360 degrees while firing it.

When the boss fight starts, the Omega Griever will skitter around the wall and spit Acid Balls at the player. If these hit, they will not only do quite a bit of damage, but force you to mash A to break free. Since he fires these in quick succession, getting hit by this means you’ll probably take the full force of this move.

You will want to keep dodging when he launches this move, as once he stops firing, he will hang out in that spot for a few seconds. This is your big window for shooting him — specifically the legs and arms, which don’t have any armor. Once he takes enough damage, the Omega Griever will expose the glowing red weak spot on his stomach for you to shoot. Damaging this will knock him to the ground.

Now the real fight begins, as the Omega Griever will use a mix of Claw Swipes, Ground Pounds, Tongue Grabs, and poucing on the player. The trick to avoiding the vast majority of these is trying to stick to one side of the boss the entire time.

Not only will this let you keep shooting its exposed legs, but you’ll avoid a lot of the moves. However, when the Omega Griever performs a ground pound, be ready to jump over it. He will release more shockwaves as his health gets slower, so the trick is to jump a bit forward to clear both shockwaves.

Focus on using any of your elemental shots to damage the legs, as they come out quickly, do a decent amount of damage and are perfect if you’ve been gathering a ton of Shot Expansions.

Once the Omega Griever takes enough damage, it will stagger and remain in place with its weak point facing the ground (shown above). When this happens, turn into a Morph Ball and roll under the boss. Drop a few bombs to damage him and quickly switch back to your normal mode so you can shoot the exposed weak point for several seconds.

When the Omega Griever takes around 30 percent damage, it will jump back onto the wall and summon a wave of normal Grievers. Deal with them quickly so you don’t need to try and avoid the Acid Ball attack while fighting them. I really like the Ice Shot for this, as it will freeze them in place to keep you from getting overwhelmed.

Now repeat the process of blasting the Omega Griever from the wall. Remember, he is most vulnerable after the Acid Ball attack, so do your best to avoid this so you have an opportunity to deal some relatively free damage.

Upon reaching a little under 50 percent health, the Omega Griever will introduce its Acid Beam and Giant Acid Ball attack. The latter is slow and pretty easy to avoid by dodging left or right. The former, you’ll want to turn into a Morph Ball and roll a little bit towards the Omega Griever so you’re out of the beam’s radius.

Eventually, the Omega Griever will take enough damage and collapse onto the ground with his tongue sticking out. Do not get close to him. This is a trap, as he will grab you and do a ton of damage. Instead, just stay back and keep shooting at his legs until he gets up.

Upon killing the Omega Griever you will earn both the Psychic Power Bomb ability and the final Teleporter Key. Congratulations, you defeated probably the most annoying boss in the game!
