One of the first real bosses you’ll encounter in Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined is Maeve. Not long after you land on Ballymalloy, you’ll meet Maeve and hear the heroic story of her brother, who went off on his own to save the town, but never made it back because the others failed to assist him.
While she won’t be up front about it at first, you’ll eventually come to realize that the monster issue the town is having now is Maeve’s way of getting revenge on the town for what everyone did to her brother, which means it’s now up to you to stop her.
How To Defeat The Crabble-Rouser
Right after it’s revealed to you that Maeve is the one behind everything, you’ll have to face the Crabble-Rouser. As you will soon come to learn, the statues where you can restore your MP and HP tend to pop up right before the final boss of the region, so it’s a good idea to stop there and save when you replenish yourself.
When you lose a boss fight, you’ll be forced to revert to a prior save or pay gold to restart the fight. So, to save yourself money and time, be sure to save with the appropriately placed statue right before you engage with any boss.
Your fight with the Crabble-Rouser is presented as a warm-up, but you’ll soon learn that this is honestly the real boss fight. Unfortunately, given how early it is in the game, your party isn’t incredibly strong, but thankfully, neither are your enemies. For the Crabble-Rouser, the recommendations are as follows:
|
Party Member |
Priorities |
|---|---|
|
Player |
Focus on buffing party members and healing when necessary. |
|
Maribel |
Utilize Frizz to deal damage. |
|
Kiefer |
Utilize Flame Slash to deal damage. |
This fight should go rather smoothly, so don’t bother using any items here unless you absolutely have to. So long as you buff your party’s defense and heal with your player character, you should be able to keep everyone in good standing without wasting any items.
As far as Crabble-Rouser’s attacks, it’ll pretty much only use Frizz, so you shouldn’t need to worry too much about defending beyond standard buffs. The main thing you’ll need to keep an eye on is when it boosts its defense. You won’t be able to do much when its defense is high, so this is prime time for healing and buffing your own party. Beyond that, continue in that pattern until you’ve won.
How To Defeat Maeve
Once you’ve finished Crabble-Rouser, you’ll watch a brief cutscene, then be pulled into your fight with Maeve. She will have changed forms a bit during that cutscene, but you’ll also have a new party member to assist you. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to control your temporary companion, but that won’t be a problem with this fight.
To start, you’ll likely be low on MP, so if you have any Phials, now would be the time to use them. Once you’ve restored your MP, get to attacking. Other than Phials to restore MP, don’t waste any healing items here; you won’t need them. When everyone is ready, here are the roles each party member should take on:
|
Party Member |
Priority |
|---|---|
|
Player |
Unfortunately, you’ll be pretty useless here if you don’t have Aqua Slash yet, which you likely won’t. So just do standard attacks and don’t worry about healing unless someone is low from the previous fight. Buffs won’t be a concern for this fight either. |
|
Maribel |
Utilize Frizz to deal damage. |
|
Kiefer |
Utilize Flame Slash to deal damage. |
As for Maeve’s attacks, well, there aren’t any. More often than not, she won’t do anything, and when she does, it will be a standard attack that does 1 damage. Following your fight with the Crabble-Rouser, you’re pretty much just in this fight with Maeve to end things for her. So continue with your attacks, and you should be able to finish her off quickly.
