How To Defeat Magnus In Mewgenics

How To Defeat Magnus In Mewgenics

Mewgenics offers a wide variety of weird freakos for you to encounter during your long and often uneasy adventure, ranging from NPCs that will help you achieve your goals to the many enemies just itching to cut your run short. As such, you can expect a great deal of boss fights that range from pretty trivial to extremely complex and challenging, and everything in between.

For example, Magnus is a relatively straightforward boss in the grand scheme of things, but can be quite pesky when you’re just starting out, as he has a decent amount of health, deals lots of damage, and can cover lots of ground, making him hard to keep up with. As you get more runs in and unlock more potent Collars and items, he will become a lot easier to deal with, but in those first few runs, he can end things before they even begin!

Magnus Overview

The Quick Fluffers squaring off against Magnus in Mewgenics.

Being a halfway point boss in the game’s first region of the first act, Magnus won’t be overly challenging, but still serves as a potential spoiler who can stop your run dead in its tracks. Again, he may not be much of an issue the further you get into the game and have more potent Collars, abilities, and items, but he is very much a threat when you’re just starting.

Here’s how to beat Calderon without losing focus.

Magnus is swift, can chain attacks together, and always positions himself a great distance away from your units, which can make it challenging to chase him down and deal damage to him consistently. Not only that, he packs a punch, so you must be conscious of your unit’s placement and positioning. But, before we cover that, let’s go over our recommended units and even more information for Magnus!

As always, since Magnus is one of many bosses you can run into as the halfway point encounter in the Alley region, you may not run into him your first few clears, allowing you to unlock better Collars that will help you out tremendously against him. So, if you have the Thief and Cleric Collars, ensure you’re using them over the Fighter and Mage, as they work much better from our experience.

However, if you don’t have that privilege, it’s still doable, but it will take a bit more effort. Fortunately, with a Mage and Hunter on your side, you can deal considerable damage to him from a safe distance, while your Tank takes the brunt of the abuse, having your Fighter try to close the gap and hit him in the back for maximum damage. Always try to keep your Tank in front of Magnus, your Fighter behind him, and the ranged units on the outskirts to maximize your odds of winning!

How To Defeat Magnus

The very start of the battle against Magnus, showcasing it's cluttered arena in Mewgenics.

Like many bosses in the first region of the game, Magnus only has access to two attacks, but when combined with his unique mobility and other tricks, he becomes a bit of a handful if you aren’t prepared. While he never seems impossible to overcome, he has the potential to shut you down if your team is battered and bruised by the time you reach him or have a mediocre build.

Nonetheless, you can overcome his offensive onslaught with a few key strategies, making him no longer a threat once you understand his limits, how to avoid his attacks strategically, and, more importantly, how to punish them consistently while outputting as much damage as possible!

Magnus – Chain Dash

Magnus performing his Chain Dash attack, showcasing the amount of distance he can cover before delivering a devastating slash in Mewgenics.

One of Magnus’s most potent attacks is his Chain Dash, which has him violently charge toward his target before unleashing a devastating strike. After delivering this attack, he will then swiftly dash toward the left or right, covering a great deal of distance, not only making him harder to attack, but also allowing him to attack even more units if they’re in his path of destruction.

To deal with this attack, we strongly encourage you to try to keep your Tank in front of Magnus, allowing you to draw aggro consistently. Additionally, never have your other units to the left or right of your Tank, as Magnus will more than likely dash toward them after attacking the Tank, putting you on your backfoot. For your Fighter, we recommend always trying to attack Magnus from behind, but only if you’re in tall grass or if your Tank goes after to help them pull aggro again!

If you have the Thief Collar unlocked and have the ability that allows you to teleport behind enemy units, ALWAYS use that to attack, allowing you to teleport behind them, land a backstab, and then swiftly get out of harm’s way by getting as far away as possible or by hiding in tall grass. If you also have the Cleric unlocked, have her hang near the Tank to constantly keep his health from getting to critical levels!

Magnus – Spin

Magnus performing his Spin attack, showcasing the AoE around him in Mewgenics.

His other attack is his Spin, which has him violently twirl in place, hitting all units around him multiple times. You do not want to get caught up in this attack with any unit outside of your Tank, or if you have a lot of armor. While he remains in place after performing this action (if he already moved beforehand), it’s sort of the move you want to see the least of, as it provides the bigger risk to your Tank’s life.

We strongly recommend keeping your Tank in front of Magnus and in tall grass for this attack, as it allows most of them to miss, severely undercutting this action’s true potential. NEVER have your units in a position where Magnus’s Spin can hit them, as it will likely take out your Hunter and Mage. Again, your Fighter may be in the crossfire depending on the rotation, so try to have them in tall grass, as they can’t brave through it nearly as much as your Tank!

As expected, this is where the Thief and Cleric will carry this encounter to tremendous heights, as the Thief can simply teleport behind Magnus, backstab them, and then get far away from the Tank to avoid this action hitting them. At the same time, the Cleric can keep healing the Tank, making it substantially less scary. However, ensure the Cleric isn’t in range of Magnus’s Chain Dash or this Spin attack, or they will also be killed pretty quickly!
