How To Defeat Lucian Baster In Crimson Desert

How To Defeat Lucian Baster In Crimson Desert

This is one of the hardest bosses I’ve faced in Crimson Desert (so far). Lucian Bastier comes at the end of act eight, and you must fight him as Damiane. If, like me, you had ignored the other characters up to this point, just focusing on leveling Kliff and his abilities, this fight is a bit of a nightmare. I was chucked in with lower-level gear and no understanding of how the character works.

But, with a bit of perserverance – and better preparation and practice – I was able to defeat Lucian Bastier in the end. Here’s how I did it.

Lucian Bastier Preparation

Damiane gear before Bastier fight in Crimson Desert.

At the end of act eight, Kliff is injured, which means it’s up to Damiane to take the reins and defeat Lucian Bastier. Up until this point, I hadn’t used Damiane at all. Not for any particular reason, I was just focused on Kliff. Damiane only has tier three gear by default, which, at this point in the game, just isn’t good enough.

However, because most of the quests are locked behind playing as Kliff, you can’t actually unlock any other Abyss Artifacts. This makes upgrading Damiane’s gear a bit tricky.

You could reset your skills to get the Artifacts back and fully spec into Damiane for this fight, or you could just upgrade where possible, equip some jewelry (Damiane isn’t wearing earrings, rings or a necklace when you get her), and figure out how her skills work.

I went for the second option, and ended up with this gear set:

  • Flower Petal Earring

    • This is just a spare earring I had from opening a lockbox in Mudridge Cabin near the Porrorin Forest.
  • Tier three Ancient Earring

    • Another spare from looting strongboxes in manor houses in Demeniss
  • Tier three Spencer Pistol
  • Tier three Demeniss Elite Uniform Leather Armor
  • Tier four Demenissian Uniform Leather Cloak
  • Tier four White Wind Rapier
  • Tier four Demenissian Uniform Leather Gloves
  • Tier four Demenissian Elite Uniform Leather Boots
  • Tier four Demenissian Gold-Decorated Shield

I did upgrade some bits of gear that required regular materials, like the Rapier, gloves, boots, shield, and cloak. Beyond that, though, further upgrades required Artifacts and Bloodstones, which I unfortunately did not have.

However, I did visit the Witch and open up some slots on this gear. I went for three Abyss cores on the sword, including Resource Recovery On Kill, Attack 2, and Wind Slash. Ideally, I would have liked some of the cores from Kliff’s gear, but he was out of action.

I also slotted my chest piece with Health +1, Stamina +1, and Damage Reduction 2.0.

Damiane also comes with a set of default skills. I didn’t mess around with these and just worked with what she came with. I’ll go into some strategies with her available skills below.

These game worlds are absolutely ripe for adapting to tabletop for your next big campaign.

Food Preparation

This is where food really comes in handy. I’d built up a huge stockpile of food, from buying Chewy Rice Cakes and Meat Porridge every day from Ronnie at the Greymane Camp, to crafting Hearty Meat Skewers using Fine Meat from hunting deer and the vegetables I found while looting the world.

I also had a backup supply of around 30 other food items, from random bits I’d stolen from manor houses to dishes I’d looted from dead enemies. Every single piece of food comes in handy when you’re trying to fight a boss like Lucian Bastier.

Lucian Bastier Boss Mechanics Guide

There are two phases to the Lucian Bastier fight. The first phase is relatively calm once you understand his attack patterns and have figured out how to utilize Damiane’s abilities.

First Phase

This is not a straightforward fight, but there is one key strategy that helped me overcome it with ease (after a bit of trial and error.) I used a combination of Blinding Flash and Damiane’s Right Trigger Ability, Smiting Bolt, to deal tiny bits of damage to Lucian while managing to dodge all incoming damage.

One benefit Damiane has over Kliff is that she’s very fast, which is suited to this fight. You can dodge repeatedly without expending all your stamina.

With a bit of good timing, you can also stun Lucian every time he is about to charge up a powerful attack using Blinding Flash (RB + LB). It took me a while to get the timing, but you need to watch for when he is about to lift his sword or go into an attacking stance. Damiane’s Blinding Flash is very fast, so you should be able to catch him out.

I then used a combination of Damiane’s Smiting Bolt and Forward Lunge ability to deal lots of damage.

If possible, try to conserve your food supplies in this fight. It might take a bit longer, but be patient and wait for the perfect time to strike. Lucian attacks so fast that you just won’t be able to damage him if you keep trying to attack quickly.

Second Phase (Awakened Lucian Bastier)

This second phase is absolutely brutal. Bastier attacks so quickly and with such ferocity that at times it feels impossible to counter or block. My only advice here is to bring loads of food, more food than you ever thought you’d need, and master the art of getting the timing down of Blinding Flash with your Smiting Bolt.

Ideally, you want to be as far away as possible from the boss at all times in this fight. Don’t try to use Damiane’s pistol, Bastier dodges every bullet.

My strategy was to hang back and dodge repeatedly when Bastier’s spectral allies started slicing and attacking. You can’t fight against him when his copies are up, so you just need to spam dodge and hope for the best.

Once the spectral allies are down, I’d hit Blinding Flash, dive in for some basic attacks and combos, hit him with a Smiting Bolt, and repeat. It took a while, and I burned through most of my food, but it worked in the end.
