Plenty of countries both large and small have risen and fallen throughout human history only to have their once-great achievements lost to time, and this fate awaits your country in Europa Universalis 5 unless you find a way to counterbalance your Prestige Decay before long!
The Prestige of your country in EU5 is critical to your influence on other countries, and you’ll find plenty of different ways to influence it throughout the game. Whether you’re marrying into power, creating great works of art, doing some impressive trade deals at the market, or whatever else, Prestige is critical for any country.
What Is Prestige?
Establish A Name For Your Country
You’ll see plenty of small countries on the map at the beginning of Europa Universalis 5 that you may not recognize as individual countries anymore, and this is because these territories have all been incorporated over time. However, the most memorable of them remain, and that’s due in large part to the country’s Prestige, the global opinion of the country over time.
Things are happening all around the world, all the time, with every country trying to go down in history. Because of this, you’ll need to maintain a Prestige score over time for your country, since you’ll need to be relevant in the current geopolitical moment if you have any hope of making it through the various ages and going down in history as a Great Power.
Every country will be dealing with a default amount of Prestige Decay over time, so be sure to invest in keeping your Prestige as high as possible to counteract being lost to time.
The more prestigious your country becomes in EU5, the more general infamy you’ll have, maintaining your power and identity over time as other territories fold together into bigger countries. There are a number of ways your Prestige impacts your country in small but meaningful ways as time progresses.
These are things like:
-
Your Cultural Influence of your country’s primary Culture (language, traditions, etc.) around the world, both in other countries and inside your own borders.
- You’ll see changes to the Skill of New Artists in your country and your Diplomatic Relations on the world stage, each of which improves as your Prestige rises – who wouldn’t love to say they’re from a highly-respected country, or at least friends with one in terms of geopolitics?
- Your Market Attraction in trading markets around the world, with more prestigious countries having more Market Attraction to keep central marketplaces in their countries for the host bonuses.
- The balance of your Antagonism, with more prestigious countries less likely to be antagonized by other, stronger ones
How To Grow Your Prestige
You’ll see a few things influencing your country’s Prestige score in EU5, for better to help cement your place in history or for worse to obscure your achievements and bury you beneath more advanced countries before long.
You can improve your country’s Prestige rating in a few ways, like:
- Accepting or arranging a Royal Marriage with a respected country, whose Prestige score is high enough that it adds to yours when the union is complete. You’ll both influence one another’s Prestige scores with the marriage, and you’ll see exactly by how much before making your decision.
-
Keeping your Nobles happy over time, with Noble Estate Satisfaction weighing somewhat heavily into Prestige scores for any country in EU5. Granting them enough extra privileges to make them happy, with their Estate Score consistently in the green, while also not jeopardizing your own Crown Power is the key to improving Prestige.
- There are a handful of buildings you can opt into creating, like the Royal Gardens, that will offer Prestige bonuses upon completion.
- Maintaining your forts to prevent the Fort Maintenance decay modifier – spend extra Ducats to maintain forts so impressive your military might becomes impossible to forget.
- Establishing the right peace treaties during war, with the Humiliation treaty from the Expansion Mission Tree granting a surprising boost for making a mockery of your foes in combat.
