Open-world crafting games often have some form of fishing, so it’s no surprise to see the feature in Hytale. However, fishing in this game is very different from what you see in the likes of Minecraft and Stardew Valley.
After all, there are no fishing rods in the game, nor is there a fishing minigame. Yet, you can certainly still catch some fish in the world of Hytale. This is a full explanation of how you do that and what to do with the fish afterward.

What You Need To Fish
Instead of fishing rods, there are Fishing Traps in this game.
To craft them, you first need a Farmer’s Workbench. This is a little odd since fishing isn’t really a farmer’s job. Regardless, you can build a Farmer’s Workbench from a regular Workbench using the following materials:
- 6 of Any Tree Logs
- 20 Plant Fibers
Once you have your Farmer’s Workbench, you need to upgrade it to Tier 2 to be able to craft the Fishing Trap. This is what you need to upgrade the Farmer’s Workbench:
- 50 Essence of life
- 5 Wheat
- 5 Lettuce
- 5 Softwood Logs (Beech, Aspen, and Banyan)
Then, you can build the Fishing Trap with the following materials:
- 10 of Any Wood
- 50 Essence of Life
- 20 Plant Fibers
- 1 Iron Ingot
Another thing that can help you fish is fish bait, which you can also make from a Tier 2 Farmer’s Workbench. Here is what you need to make some:
- 3 of Any Fruit
- 5 Essence of Life

Start a farm by your base, or hunt specific animals as you explore to gather some pretty desirable resources.
How To Catch A Fish
Once you have your Fishing Trap and Bait, you are ready to catch some fish. So, with your trap in hand, wander into the ocean or pond and place the device on top of the water with a right-click.
Then, get your Bait in your hand and right-click on the Trap to insert it. Now, it’s all about waiting for your Trap to be sprung. This can take a bit of time, but the Bait makes it faster.
Once a fish has been caught, you can walk up to the Trap and hit ‘f’ to harvest it and retrieve the fish.
What To Use The Fish For
To make use of a fish you’ve caught, you need a Chef’s Stove. You can build one from the Workbench using the following things:
- 2 Copper Ingots
- 10 of Any Tree Logs
- 5 of Any Stone
With the Chef’s Stove and the fish you’ve caught, you can make Raw Fish using the stove. You may notice there are a few different versions of this in the Chef’s Stove menu. This is because the amount of Raw Fish you can make depends on the rarity of the fish you caught. Here’s a breakdown:

Once you have the Raw Fish, you can cook it using a campfire. You don’t even need a Workbench to build a Campfire; you just need these items:
