How To Break The Time Loop In The Mental Asylum In Romeo Is A Dead Man

How To Break The Time Loop In The Mental Asylum In Romeo Is A Dead Man

Romeo is a Dead Man takes a sharp turn into psychological horror when you arrive at St. Impius Asylum, trapping you in a recursive loop that demands observation and careful timing. The asylum’s three floors become increasingly familiar as you’re forced to relive the same sequence, each iteration revealing new objectives and dangers that inch you closer to breaking free.

This isn’t a straightforward exploration – it’s a puzzle wrapped in escalating tension, where stopping tapes and evading a relentless monster become routine before you finally earn access to the Advanced Research Lab. The time loop might feel disorienting initially, but with a few pointers in the right direction, you’re sure to come out successfully.

Investigating The Asylum

The door to the advanced research lab in the asylum in Romeo is a Dead Man.

You’re not given much direction when you first enter St. Impius Asylum. Upon entering the asylum, you’ll be treated to a few cutscenes as you progress further in.

Once in the run-down part of the asylum, start exploring and getting your bearings. You have three levels to explore, and you’ll become quite familiar with them over time.

The aim is to head to the third floor and try to enter the Advanced Research Lab. Trying to do so, however, will reset Romeo back at the entrance, establishing that this level is all about a recursive loop that you’ll need to break.

How To Escape The Loop

A tape that channels the loop in Romeo is a Dead Man.

The loop works quite simply: you must accomplish one objective during the loop and then interact with the doors to the Advanced Research Lab to reach the next stage of the loop. Interacting with the doors without completing the necessary steps will simply reset the loop without changing anything, serving as a teleport to the ground floor.

There are four loop stages to work through.

Loop 1

The dark figures of the asylum in Romeo is a Dead Man.

Enter the laundry room and interact with the washing machine, then interact with the dark figure in the doorway. Then, try to enter the Advanced Research Lab to reset the loop.

Loop 2

Witness the cutscene upon reaching the second floor, then stop the tape on the desk in the Group Therapy Room. Interact with the new dark figure, and then enter the Assisted Wash Room on the same floor.

The door that used to be covered up in Romeo is a Dead Man.

Take the door inside the Wash Room to the adjacent room and follow the route to the Pathology Lab where you’ll find another tape to stop. Then, interact with the dark figure and reset the loop as normal.

Loop 3

On the second floor, return to the Assisted Wash Room by moving through the adjacent room you unlocked on the previous loop, and stop the tape inside. Then, reach the third floor by getting through the interactable shutter at the far end of the second floor and reset the loop.

The monster you saw in the previous loop will appear after stopping the tape. You’ll need to wait for the monster to pass the doorway, turn around, and reach near the opposite end of the hallway before trying to open the shutter, as it will turn around and start trying to attack when it hears you.

Loop 4

Head all the way to the third floor and open the door to Room N304. Inside will be a patient you must interact with. The goal in this ‘minigame’ is to move the sticks (the controls should be on-screen) to alter the patient’s face to match the photograph.

For Patrick, move the left stick to the left and slightly upwards, and the right stick to the right and slightly upwards.

Upon completion, the monster will appear in the hallway. Wait for it to be moving towards the Advanced Research Lab and past the doorway to the room you found Patrick in, and then make a dash for the rooms opposite the Lab. Enter Room N301 to rest, and wait for the monster to make another round. Once it passes the doorway back towards the Lab and gets a fair bit down the hallway, head over to the shutter and open it.

Head down to the second floor, where the first monster you found is still roaming the hallway. Your goal is to reach the room adjacent to the stairwell you just used – you can use the Pathology Lab as a safe spot to watch the monster from. Follow behind the monster as it makes its way to the Group Therapy Room and find a patient in the next room along. Fixing Rosemary’s face simply requires both sticks to be held downwards.

The next goal is the Storage Room on this floor. To get there, you’ll need to follow behind the monster as it walks towards the Therapy Room, very closely (as it turns around very close to the Storage Room). Inside, the final patient waits. This one requires the left stick pointed to the right, and the right stick pointed towards the upper-right.

With all three patients ‘fixed’, you can make your way to the Lab via the shutter at the end of the second floor hallway and reset the loop.

How To Reach The Boss

Entering the TV in the asylum in Romeo is a Dead Man.

Upon completing the fourth loop, you’ll find yourself finally inside the Research Lab. There’s a television here, so obviously the next step is in subspace.

The rest of the level is rather linear – it’s a simple case of unlocking new televisions as you collect Klista Key parts in subspace, then moving through the asylum as you get attacked by Rotters.

Romeo in the asylum's subspace in Romeo is a Dead Man.

You’ll face a new type of enemy here – Flabs. They’re immune to bullets while they have the coating of flab on them, so you’ll have to get up-close and personal with them with physical attacks. They have weak points on the backs of their necks, but they’re so quick to turn that it’s probably not worth targeting them. They make for good fodder for Bloody Summer charges, with how annoying they can be.

The routes through asylum and subspace will lead you directly to the Klista Gate, which leads to the level’s boss: Fused Reanimated.
