How To Boost Rare Monster Rates In Octopath Traveler 0

In series tradition, Octopath Traveler 0 has a couple of categories when it comes to rare monsters: Caits and Octopuffs. In both cases, the amount of EXP and JP earned goes far beyond virtually anything else in the game, making them your best prospects for powering up your squad. And in a game with this many recruitable party members, you’re going to want all the help you can get.

Whether Octopath Traveler 0 Will Maintain Series Continuity Is Entirely Up To You

There’s a way to increase your prospects for bumping into Caits and Octopuffs. Actually, there are several ways, and by combining them, you’ll boost your chances so much that they’ll seldom seem all that “rare” again.

Where Can Caits And Octopuffs Be Found?

Caits are located in a great many zones, and while I’m not sure offhand which zones don’t spawn them, it can comfortably be said that quite a few do. In fact, it may very well hold true that there are more places with Caits than without them. I’ve seen them in side dungeons, along routes between towns, and even in climactic story stages like castles.

The difference in Cait species stems from the recommended level of a given zone, so you’ll find ordinary Caits in early areas, Chubby Caits in later ones, and so forth. That matters because higher-tier Caits drop greater EXP. 1,000 is a ton early on, and it’s nothing to scoff at in the mid-game, but it’s far less impactful later. 5,000 EXP on the other hand, is a big deal until the very highest levels.

Octopuffs are sea-dwellers, so you’ll only find them in the Middlesea and Outersea regions. You can traverse these once you’ve acquired your boat, the Queen Orsa.

The difficulty in finding rare monsters is only half the equation. They often flee for their first action, and usually flee in their second action at most. It is therefore imperative that you use the highest-accuracy attacks you have, as well as any speed-lowering or turn-stalling moves in your arsenal, which will delay the escape attempt should they not bolt at the very beginning.

How To Stack The Odds In Your Favour

There are a couple of ways to do this, and you can combine them to amplify your chances to the max. This doesn’t mean you’ll always encounter rare monsters, of course. Far from it. But you will notice a sizable impact – that I can guarantee.

More Rare Monsters Mastery

We’ll start with More Rare Monsters, the tantalizingly-titled Mastery which can be equipped in a character’s Support Skill slot. Mind you, multiples of the same More Rare Monsters skill won’t stack, so if you find several, there’s little point in equipping more than one, as you’ll only be seeing results from the first.

As it happens, I’ve only found one thus far, anyway – in a treasure chest at Snowshard Grotto. Note, however, that this is a blue chest, which means you must complete up to Chapter 5 of the “Kindlers of the Flame” Wishvale restoration arc and upgraded the church twice.

Doing so will let you unlock blue chests, and this is highly recommended in general, as many of Octopath Traveler 0’s best stuff is found in them.

Lucky Coin

And then there’s the Lucky Coin, an accessory which will do the same thing the More Rare Monsters mastery does. It, too, can’t be combined with other Lucky Charms to enhance the effect; combining it with More Rare Monsters, however, will double your chances.

To obtain the Lucky Coin, you must recruit Tressa, and then get far enough in the Kindlers of the Flame arc to begin the amity mechanic. This allows you to walk up to residents you’ve placed throughout Wishvale (in this case, Tressa) and give them stuff to Inquire Further, a new evolution of the Inquire Path Action only available here.

Inquire Further twice (the second time, she’ll want a Tressalad) and the Lucky Coin is yours.

You can eventually build Silver and Gold versions of Cait and Octopuff creatures at Wishvale, but you’ll need Cait Whiskers and Octopus Suction Cups, respectively, plus Silver or Gold Ingots. The downer is that these do not increase your chances of meeting the foes. They do something better, though – they increase your EXP and leaves (Cait statues) or JP (Octopuffs).

A Spoiler-y Suggestion

Ringbearer Aelfric in octopath Traveler 0.-1

Very late in Octopath Traveler 0’s sprawling story, a certain party member can help you stop the Caits and Octopuffs from ever fleeing. Equip them with Dance of Sloughs to lower their Accuracy/Evasion and push them to the back of the turn order, and between Soulstones, a fairly high Accuracy stat for your characters at this point in the game, helpers, and a tiny dose of luck, you’ll have no problem beating them.

Again, this is kind of a big spoiler. Not the biggest shocker in the game, but still.

Anyway, it’s Bargello! He finally joins your party in the last arc, and he has a skill which makes it so that he always goes first. This preempts even Caits and Octopuffs, thank goodness.

For whatever reason, the game’s coding kind of messes up when you launch a surprise attack, and it seems to pull from whoever has the highest Speed stat instead, but that’s no big deal – you’ll still get the first move regardless. Bargello isn’t the strongest Octopath Traveler 0 character in the game, but the guy’s custom-built to net you all the EXP you could ever dream of.
