In a year that’s full of great games, Demon Tides has to be one of the earliest surprises. Turf was a great game, but Tides takes everything that it did right and goes even further with it.
The most notable example of this is that Tides is now an open-world game with a huge ocean that’s full of platforming challenges and things to uncover. That might sound daunting, but it ends up having a very good flow.
How Long Does It Take To Beat?
Demon Tides’ open world (which is really more of an open sea) is split into three distinct regions, each filled with islands that host their own platforming challenges and missions. You’re given free rein to explore each region as you see fit, taking on these challenges to earn enough Golden Gears to progress to the next area.
At first, Demon Tides’ world seems humongous and perhaps even a little daunting, but it’s actually very well designed to keep you constantly exploring and being rewarded. Each region in the game takes around four hours or so to clear, and if you’re just aiming to get enough Golden Gears, then you’ll likely end up spending around 10 to 12 hours beating Demon Tides.
My playthrough lasted 13 hours, but I did uncover nearly all of the map and its islands in that time. I haven’t completed every single side mission or collected every item just yet, but I know where abouts everything is.

How Long Does It Take To 100 Percent Complete?
Just collecting the necessary Golden Gears in Demon Tides is only scratching the surface of the game, though. There are a total of 45 Golden Gears, with 35 being needed to finish the game. Once you’ve collected them all, you’ll gain access to a hidden final area of the game through Runa’s Cannon.
Golden Gears aside, Demon Tides also has a ton of outfits, Talismans, Mr Mint challenges, Gearserkers, and other things to find throughout the world. If you want to see and do everything that Ragnar’s Rock has to offer, you’re easily looking at 15 hours or more depending on your skill level.
Some of the game’s Talismans help you find specific collectibles, which should make it easier to 100 percent every island.
The final thing that Demon Tides has to offer with its world is speedrun challenges, and while they are optional, completing them all (with a good time no less) can add another few hours onto the game. They’re less time-consuming since you have to clear an area to take part, but doing all of them in the world could bump your Demon Tides playthrough way past 20 hours.
