If there’s one thing Hideo Kojima loves more than making video games that are artistic, lengthy and full of weird charm, it’s movies. The legendary auteur has long maintained a passion for all things film, filmmaking and more, often posting reviews of whatever he’s watching on his social media channels for all to see.
Typically, these reviews have some sort of appreciation, perhaps a critique, and almost always a selife of the man himself in the theater.
That said, fans are convinced that Kojima was not a fan of Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, the latest installment in the “Whodunit” Knives Out franchise. Why? Because Kojima’s review was a non-review.
Yup, that’s it. No appreciation, no selfie, no deep dive into why the movie clicked. Just “I watched the movie.”
For what it’s worth, we don’t know exactly if Kojima did, in fact, hate the movie. There’s a good chance any critique or appreciation would’ve spoiled things.
But if he did, then he’d likely be in the minority of viewers, as the film maintains an 81 on Metacritic off 57 critic reviews and a 7.4 user rating
Over on Rotten Tomatoes, that number is 92 percent from critics and 94 percent from users.
You Know Things Are Bad When Kojima Even Had Nice Things To Say About Joker 2
Very quickly after Kojima’s review went viral, fans began searching for any instances in which Kojima similarly “hated” a movie, and as we mentioned up top, it’s pretty rare.
A year ago, when Joker: Folie à Deux released, Kojima shared a rather nice review of the film, even discussing some of its finer details that likely would’ve gone over the heads of many watchers.
For reference, the sequel to Joker has a 31 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, both critically and from watchers.
The only other time that fans could recall Kojima not having anything to share about a movie is when he watched The Marvels. Except, at least at that time, he did share his obligatory selfie and some free swag he got.
Given how much Kojima has made it clear that he wants to make a movie before all is said and done, it’ll be fascinating to see what the reviews actually look like, and whether people will meme things by saying they watched the movie.
