Here’s Why Sony Is Making a Japan-Specific PS5 Console

Focusing entirely on the Switch 2 and the three PS5 models, lifetime Japanese sales for the two boxes look like this, as of 9th November 2025:

  1. Base PS5 (w/ disc drive) — 5.8 million sales
  2. Nintendo Switch 2 — 2.6 million sales
  3. Base PS5 Digital — 1 million sales
  4. PS5 Pro — 266,000 sales

In total, all versions of the PS5 have collectively sold around seven million units. Compare this to the 2.6 million sales of the Switch 2, which have taken place inside just six months, and it’s easy to see why Sony would want to claw back a bit of market share. Of course, the Switch 2 offers a different kind of experience as both a home and handheld console, but the cheaper, Japanese-specific model can only have helped shift units.

Sony will be hoping this new PS5 model for Japan will help its sales in the region, as the console turns five years old.
