By this point, it’s abundantly clear that if there’s any way to make something a subscription, it’ll become a subscription. Case in point: Grand Theft Auto, which received its own subscription titled GTA+, where players can get access to a wealth of benefits related to GTA Online, as well as access to some of Rockstar’s oldest titles, all for one monthly price of $7.99.
So why does this matter? Because as first spotted by GamesRadar, via some hardcore GTA fans, GTA+ now gives subscribers access to Grand Theft Auto Online for free, provided you maintain an active subscription.
It’s a pretty massive move, especially when you consider how Rockstar has had no problems selling copies of Grand Theft Auto 5 all these years later. But here’s where things get interesting — what if it’s a sign of things to come?
Rockstar Would Rake In Millions If GTA 6 Online Was “Free”
As the Rockstar Games fan noted on Twitter following the announcement of GTA Online’s “free” status, what if this is all a precursor to the online element of Grand Theft Auto 6 similarly being free so long as you’re subscribed to GTA+?
That’s actually an extremely valid point. After all, Rockstar generates most of its income after the fact, thanks to the many microtransactions that exist in GTA Online. It wouldn’t be too far out there for them to make GTA 6 Online “free” with a monthly subscription and let those same users spend millions on in-game clothing, weapons and vehicles.
Of course, we could all be overthinking things, and Rockstar hit the “Break Glass in Case of Emergency” button following the delay of Grand Theft Auto 6 to November 2026 and wants to squeeze whatever remains from GTA 5.
But it could also be attempting to see what a player’s spending habits are like after getting access to the online portion without having to purchase the game, and whether that ultimately makes sense for GTA 6, and considering we still don’t know much of anything about GTA 6’s online, all cards are on the table until proven otherwise.
