There’s a running joke among GTA Online players that the Mile High Club skyscraper has been in construction for at least 12 years (or 240, if you consider that a GTA day lasts 48 minutes), and that it will never be finished. All kinds of theories have cropped up to try and explain why that is, from Franklin assassinating the Gold Coast CEO, bankrupting his business and halting all work, to construction workers dying on the job so much that they’re on permanent strike.
I am under the impression that this skyscraper is a theme park where people can pay to pretend to be a construction worker.
The real answer is, of course, that it’s a video game. Numerous missions in GTA 5 and Online require the site to be under construction, and remodelling an entire part of the map is no small feat, especially with Rockstar now focused on getting Grand Theft Auto 6 out the door. But that hasn’t stopped these kinds of theories from running rampant to such a point that it has even been referenced in-game.
“They’re Sure Not Using This Stuff To Build That Skyscraper”
As pointed out by u/Original-Slide4454, the recently introduced New Listing Missions task you with stealing building materials from the Mile High Club to help construct a mansion, thus earning you a discount when they arrive in the next update. During this mission, Raf jokes, “I dunno why they’re so pi**ed! They’re sure as sh*t not using this stuff to build that fu**in’ skyscraper!”
So, even in-universe, it’s a joke now that the Mile High Club is never going to finish construction.
Odds are, by the time that GTA 6 rolls around and we move onto the next iteration of Online, the building still won’t be finished – again, this is a video game, and variety between levels keeps things fresh. But some fans are still clinging to the hope that the final update for GTA 5 will pull away the scaffolding and reveal… a bog-standard office building, with a nice little banner thanking everyone for playing.
