Fortnite Zero Hour Event’s Technical Issues Frustrate Fans

Fortnite’s Zero Hour Chapter Finale event hit the airwaves today, and by “airwaves,” I mean the game itself. In order to watch/sort of play Chapter 6’s big finish (and the wrap-up to The Simpsons’ entertaining arc, too), players needed to log into the game, check out the “Discover” zone, click on the correct portion of the screen, and… grab some popcorn, I guess.

Some fans had it easy. They were able to participate in the playable quasi-cinematic with no trouble at all. That’s undoubtedly in line with Epic Games’ expectations, as who-knows-how-many-dollars were spent on this latest lush sequence, and no company’s leadership wakes up in the morning and decides it would be funny if their audience failed to experience the product in any meaningful capacity.

You Can Totally Watch This, Though

The above video isn’t Zero Hour’s event finale; it’s the fresh teaser for Pacific Break, which is to say, the long-running and profoundly successful live-service phenomenon’s seventh chapter. Pacific Break launches several hours from now, as of this writing, following a necessary maintenance period – which, in turn, is following the Chapter 6 grand finale.

Which, in turn, was largely a blank black screen for a fair number of hyped-up players. Others “enjoyed” unfortunate video freezes. In fact, that happened to quite a few, as the replies to the official Twitter account confirm:

It’s a lot, and it’s highly unfortunate, but given the inevitable server issues that occur when millions of people rush to watch your content, it’s hardly uncharacteristic. Epic has made a nonstop mint on Fortnite, but even the sturdiest servers in the world would feel some real stress under this degree of pressure, and I doubt Fortnite’s fit the bill. (Not because they’re bad. Because that title probably belongs to some government agency or something.)

Thankfully, my boss is pretty cool, so she gave me a bunch of screenshots of her Deadpool-draped character hopping around and enjoying the immersion. She also clued me in on the what’s what, explaining that the cube – an old Fortnite villain, if I’m understanding correctly – made a dramatic return. It was wielded, after a fashion, against the Dark Presence in a splashy final battle that’d feel right at home in The Avengers: Endgame.

Update! The full video has been uploaded, and you can totally check it out, whether you missed it because you were elsewhere or because you tried to tune in and the servers decided they hated you:
