If you’re a fighting game fan and/or a fan of everything Marvel Comics, then this weekend is all the rage, as Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls, the recently announced tag-team fighter from Arc System Works and Sony with a very anime-like twist, is currently undergoing a closed beta test, where fans can continue to hone their skills ahead of release.
Unfortunately, for one reason or another, there haven’t been any character announcements, leading many to think that, at least at launch, the roster won’t be very big, something not too out of this world for an Arc System Works title.
That said, this closed beta features Spider-Man and Ghost Rider, along with some new stages, including the fabled X-Mansion. It’s there at the house of all the good mutants that fans have spotted a rather neat Easter Egg that could point to the inclusion of more X-Men characters.

Marvel Tokon Is The First Triple-A Fighting Game Doing Something New In A Long Time
Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls is the most anticipated fighting game in years, and there are many good reasons why.
Are You Saying There’s A Chance? Please Don’t Give Me Hope
Over on Twitter, one fighting game fan spotted that, when Storm is not actively part of a team in a match taking place at the X-Mansion, you can spot her in the background of the stage fighting Sentinels, alongside Iceman, Rogue, Gambit, Nightcrawler, Psylocke and Angel.
Go figure that, when you add Storm to your team and play a match at the X-Mansion, she’s no longer seen in the background, but the rest of the X-Men cast is.
OK, so why does this matter? Well, when it comes to roster additions, it wouldn’t be a Marvel game without some serious X-Men representation, but in the lead-up to the beta, there was some fear that the mutant representation would be pretty low, seeing as all the iconic X-Men characters were included as background fodder and not actual announced roster additions.
If you haven’t played X-Men: Next Dimension before, then you owe it to yourself to try it out. It’s a 3D X-Men fighting game with an actual story mode.
If that wasn’t enough to sell you on it, Patrick Stewart reprises his role as Professor Xavier… in a video game!
But now that we have proof that at least one character can be both background fodder and part of a match, it’s given some fans, including this one, hope that Nightcrawler, Gambit or whoever else can do the same, assuming there are more roster announcements to be made.
Hopefully these theories are correct and the rest of the X-Men aren’t relegated to the background when the final product launches.
