Heads up, Final Fantasy fans: there’s a nonzero chance you’ll be waiting a while to get the PC version of Final Fantasy 7’s myriad excellent mods back and running if you purchase the upcoming new version of the game. Which, uh, we don’t know much about yet, but hey, here’s where I reported on it.
That’s because the new version might very well be utilizing a separate recompile, which puts modders’ hard-worked content back on the drawing board until further notice. Bear in mind, this isn’t guaranteed. But considering the original version of the Steam release, henceforth referred to by Square Enix themselves as “Final Fantasy 7: 2013 Edition,” will no longer be available for purchase once its replacement is out on the digital market, it may be prudent to snag that one ahead of time if you’ve not already done so.
Thanks For The FYI
7th Heaven, FFNx, and oh so many more user-made mods have elevated Final Fantasy 7 to new heights for those who are up for a PC-based playthrough. These have become staple discussion topics within Final Fantasy’s sprawling hardcore community, and whether you’ve finished the excellent main story zero times or a dozen, it’s worth looking into them.
As @Tsunamods notes above, and Square’s Steam post straightforwardly confirms, “Final Fantasy 7: 2013 Edition” will no longer be buyable following its mysterious successor’s launch. However! And this is important! Existing owners of the game’s, uh, 2013-2026 iteration, will be eligible to obtain the new version at no extra cost.
You really have nothing to lose, then, for grabbing the OG while you still can. And we don’t know just yet when it’s getting replaced, so time is of the essence. Ordinarily on sale for $11.99 USD, FF7 is presently part of the Square Enix Winter Sale for just $4.99 USD. I’m not sure about regional comparisons, but if you’re here in the U.S., at least, that’s a sweet deal for one of the greatest Japanese role-playing games of all time. Especially when you’re gaining access to its maybe-better, maybe-worse, shiny 2026-onward variant.

Sounds like at least some of it will get toned down. Or… toned up?
