A while ago, Ubisoft revealed that a Far Cry TV show was in the works, only to scrub all mentions of it almost immediately. It seems whatever the issue was at that time has been resolved, as the announcement has been made once again. FX has ordered a series based on the game, with Alien: Earth’s Noah Hawley and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’s Rob Mac in charge.
While there aren’t any more details about the upcoming show, it seems it will follow the video game series’ anthology formula, with each season featuring a new location, protagonist, and antagonist. The first season will also star Mac, but considering how the antagonist is the main focus in each Far Cry game, it’s unclear what role he’ll play.
Far Cry TV Show Will Follow An Anthology Format Like The Games
“Getting to work alongside Noah Hawley is a dream realized,” said Mac. “Ubisoft has been remarkably generous, entrusting us with one of the most iconic video-game worlds ever created. And through it all, my FX family continues to lift me up with their constant belief and support.” Mac has previously worked with Ubisoft Film & Television on Mythic Quest, which was cancelled after four seasons, as well as with FX on the Welcome to Wrexham docu-series about his soccer team.
Okay, The Far Cry Adaptation Is One Video Game Show Too Many
Can we all just take a second to question if this is a good idea?
“What I love about the Far Cry game franchise is it’s an anthology. Each game is a variation of a theme, the same way each season of Fargo is a variation on a theme,” added Hawley. Just like the Far Cry games, each season of the show will be “set in a new setting following a new cast of characters.”
It will be weird seeing Mac in a serious role after It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Mythic Quest, and just his general jovial demeanor, maybe he’ll be able to channel his inner Nightman for the role. However, if the villain for the first series hasn’t been set yet, his IASIP co-star Glenn Howerton would make a perfect antagonist. The show has heavily hinted that he’s a serial killer, and some of his performances on the comedy show have been downright terrifying.
