Fable Will Ditch Its Longtime Dog Companion Mechanic, Dev Reveals

Fable Will Ditch Its Longtime Dog Companion Mechanic, Dev Reveals

The long-awaited revival of Fable has finally seen the light of day, courtesy of Thursday’s Xbox Developer Direct. Playground Games pulled back the curtain to showcase the first Fable title since 2010, including customizable characters, as well as its open world nature. Oh, and the game is releasing in 2026, specifically this Fall, with a day-and-date drop on PlayStation 5.

In the wake of Fable’s grand reveal, a lot more has come out about the game, including whether this latest entry will see the return of the fan-favorite dog companions. The short answer is: No.

As part of an interview with IGN, Playground Games founder and general manager Ralph Fulton revealed the rationale behind ditching the dog, and it’s understandable, even if its upsetting.

“Yeah, I did know I was going to get this question,” Fulton said. “And do you know what? There are some folks on the team that were relishing me getting this question because I cut it a while back. You know what? For development reasons, right?

“I don’t need to go into any more detail than that, except to say there are a substantial number of people on the team who have yet to forgive me for that decision.”

But what about in a sequel? Surely that’s the number one thing that would be added.

“I hear you on that,” Fulton told IGN. “Hey, for those people that still bear a grudge, this is my penance.”

Perfect Dark Zero

20 Years Later, This Forgotten First Person Shooter Remains An Irresistible Guilty Pleasure

It’s been two decades since Perfect Dark Zero launched alongside the Xbox 360.

Disappointing as it may be, it’s understandable that it won’t be in the final product. Who knows, maybe it’ll be added later. Recently, Avowed made waves when it revealed that non-human characters would be playable, something absent at launch for similar developmental reasons, but were later added after post-launch.

Dogs Are And Forever Will Be The GOAT Video Game Companion

If there is one thing that can take a video game over the top, it’s the presence of dogs. Seriously, man’s best friend being in a video game and part of the journey is one of the best things.

Even if Fable ultimately never adds a dog, like there was in past Fable titles, there’s still no shortage of dog-related companions in other games that can help take the sting out.

Just off the top of our heads, Far Cry 5 has a dog, Fallout has dogs, there’s D-Dog in Metal Gear Solid 5, Chop in Grand Theft Auto 5 and various dogs are throughout the Pokemon series.

As for best doggo, well, that’s a hard one because they’re all the best. Seriously, they’re all No. 1 in our eyes.
