Fable Doesn’t Have Morality Based Character Morphing

Fable Doesn’t Have Morality Based Character Morphing

Even though Playground Games acknowledges that morality morphing was a “central part” of the original Fable trilogy, it won’t be featured at all in the new game.

Last night, Xbox’s Developer Direct finally gave us our first proper look at Fable after nearly six years since it was originally announced. It’s been a long time coming, but almost everything that Playground Games showed suggested that it’s going to be more than worth the wait and a worthy successor to Lionhead’s beloved trilogy.

One of the most interesting things that was highlighted in the showcase was the new morality system, which no longer views things as good and evil. It’s basically more like traits that get developed over time which, while very cool, had some fans worried that the classic morality morphing system wouldn’t be a part of the new game. Sadly, that’s exactly the case.

Fable Won’t Morph Your Appearance Based On Your Morality, Since It “Doesn’t Really Work”

Following Fable’s big debut at the Developer Direct, IGN had the chance to sit down with Playground Games founder and general manager Ralph Fulton to talk about everything that was shown. Fulton is asked about the new mortality system, and whether it’ll affect the player’s appearance like it did in the original games.

We’re further and further from greatness.

In response, Fulton confirms that character morphing won’t be a thing in the new game, despite being a “really central part” of the Lionhead trilogy. One of the big reasons for this is that the new morality system is moving away from “objective good and evil”, which was what the original games based the morphing on.

It’s about that high level principle I was talking about, that there is no objective good and evil. And the original games were predicated on there being an objective good and an objective evil, and you were somewhere along that scale, and that’s what determined how your appearance changed. – Ralph Fulton

The other reason that Fulton notes is that the new game is all about building a reputation, which can be completely different depending on where you go in Albion and what you do. With that in mind, it didn’t really make sense to morph the player’s appearance, since walking into a new area with “horns and a trident” would let your reputation precede you.

Fulton notes that Playground Games thought that the reputation and new morality system were more important to the new Fable than “that legacy feature”, since it just doesn’t fit the new mechanics. While I’m sure that some fans are going to be disappointed (in fact, some already are), in my eyes, it’s a more than fair response that shows Playground’s dedication to the direction it’s taking the series in.
