Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is one of those games that has you choose your own ending, deciding to give players the ultimate choice based on their own morality. It’s one of the very rare examples of a game having two endings that have both positive and negative consequences, meaning everything is a shade of grey, and it’s up to the individual player to determine which one is right.
Of course, an ending like that is a prime topic for a good debate between gamers, as everyone has their preferred ending for a variety of reasons. Even the game’s own cast have their preference, but when it comes to lead actors Jennifer English and Ben Starr – who played Maelle and Verso respectively – they seem to be aligned on which is best, and I’m right there with them.
If you haven’t twigged already, there are going to be pretty massive spoilers for Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 going forward.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Maelle And Verso Actors Both Agree On The Best Ending
Speaking with GamesRadar at the Golden Joysticks earlier this month, both Jennifer English and Ben Starr were asked exactly which ending they preferred, and both of them chose Maelle’s. For those unaware, that’s the ending in which Maelle disregards Verso’s wishes and brings all of her friends back to life, trapping her in the painted world letting her live her best life.

Clair Obscur’s Ending Forgets The Point Of The Journey
What happened to “for those who come after?”
English reckons that this is the best ending because she’s, understandably, connected to the character and wants to “let her live her delulu fantasy life”, before becoming a bit more profound and saying that what Maelle is living in is “a reality”, but “it’s just a different one.” It’s a valid argument, and something that I myself grappled with after finding out my favorite party of characters in decades were all fictional.
On the other hand, Ben Starr’s answer is a bit less serious. He starts out being his usual ‘tongue-in-cheek’ self by saying that he prefers Maelle’s ending because he “really likes [his] acting in it”, and that people should pick her ending to “see why I won this award”, referencing his Golden Joystick.
Thankfully, he brings things down to Earth and gives his honest opinion, saying that he thinks “both endings are Alicia’s ending” and that “both are completely valid.” That’s the beauty of Expedition 33’s ending, as there isn’t a right or wrong answer, people can just have their favorite and move on with their life. However, if you did choose Verso’s ending, you are wrong.
