Expedition 33 Devs Have Been Knighted

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 developer Sandfall Interactive has been picking up awards left, right, and center over the past few months, having accumulated so many that the game has officially beaten the likes of Elden Ring and Baldur’s Gate 3 as the most awarded game ever made. For a relatively small team working on a relatively small budget, that’s no small feat.

You’d think that there would be no awards left for Clair Obscur to grab, and in terms of awards from the games industry, that might be true. However, Sandfall announced that they’d picked up a very different kind of award earlier today, revealing via the studio’s LinkedIn page that several of the studio’s developers have been knighted.

First shared by Videogamer, Sandfall revealed that they have been awarded with the Order of Arts and Letters, which is an award given out by the French government’s Ministry of Culture for “significant contributions to the arts, literature, or the propagation of these fields.” In the LinkedIn post that Sandfall shared, they thank the team who helped make the game and hope that their award inspires others to pursue work in which ever creative field they choose.

Maelle’s looking a bit rough these days.

“From Expeditioners to Knights! We were received yesterday at the Ministry of Culture to celebrate our game, Clair Obscur Expedition 33. As such, the members of Sandfall Interactive were awarded the Order of Arts and Letters,” reads the announcement.

“This distinction honors us, and our deepest thanks go especially to our team who shaped this world and to the millions of players who have brought it to life. We hope that our journey will inspire all those who wish to take the plunge and create their own work.”

So, there we have it. Turns out, making an excellent game could potentially get you knighted by the French government, if you happen to be French, of course. It’s still a pretty neat accolade to have, but one thing I hope more than anything is that Monoco got knighted too, because he’s a good boy and should be treated as such.
