Back in July, when Microsoft went on a spree of cancelling projects and shutting down studios, John Romero’s Romero Games revealed that it had lost funding for the shooter it was working on. While the studio thankfully didn’t shutter, Romero revealed that they had to take a step back and evaluate their next steps.
Now, five months later, Romero has revealed that the project is alive, with the team back at work to finish it. He also said that the game has changed quite a lot since Microsoft pulled funding, but the trade off is that the devs could do exactly what they wanted and the current version of it is more fun.
Romero Games’ Cancelled Shooter Is Back
Speaking at Salón del Videojuego de Madrid (thanks, Eurogamer), Romero said that the game had been saved, and revealed a few details. “There’s a really good 110 people working on the game,” and it has “been basically completely redesigned”. While a lot has been stripped from the previous version of the game, it “incorporates a lot of the elements” from the original vision.
“We’re not starting at ground zero,” he added. “We can take pieces out of and put into a brand new indie game. We have a lot of stuff we can put in the game. The design is completely different, but the team is very excited about the new design.”
Interview: Doom Co-Creator John Romero Says “Hell Yes” To Female Doom Slayer
We recently spoke to John Romero to talk about modern shooters, his own projects and his thoughts on a female Doomslayer.
While the studio’s new version of the game is much smaller, Romero said that it feels “more fun” for the devs to work on, as “the people working on it are all directors from different departments, and they didn’t actually get to the code or design or whatever to do it themselves, but now we get to actually do that”.
“[We get to] do the thing we are really good at, ourselves. And, that’s why small teams are great,” he added. As for what the game will be, he said it’s unlike any game he’s ever played, and it will still remain a shooter. “But, the things that you do in it, will be new to people, the way that going through Elden Ring was a really new experience,” he said.
“It was a very crazy place, and a different world, and it was really cool to explore it and be like ‘what is that?’,” Romero added. “That’s the idea behind what we are doing in this game.”
