Dispatch is an episodic game, which means that during the period in which the game was releasing, we saw all sorts of wild theories fly around about where the story would go. Now that we’ve seen every episode, it can be fun to go back and look at some of the things that people thought without all the pieces in front of them, but there’s one particular theory that broke the hearts of developer AdHoc Studios.
For some reason, many were absolutely convinced that Dispatch was hiding a secret villain in plain sight, and many of these people settled on Blonde Blazer. She shares an intimate moment with main character Robert on top of a billboard, which can potentially lead to a slight kiss, before players find out that she’s in a relationship with Phenomeman. It was because of this that many people turned on Blazer, and went as far as theorizing that she was secretly a villain out to manipulate Robert.
Dispatch Devs Were “Heartbroken” When Fans Thought Blonde Blazer Was A Villain
Behind the scenes, Dispatch developer AdHoc Studios was absolutely mortified to see public opinion switch on Blonde Blazer so drastically. In an interview with PCGamesN, creative director Dennis Lenart says that the team didn’t expect to see such a kind and pure-hearted character like Blonde Blazer end up in the firing line, and all they could do was sit there and hope people came around.
“The Blonde Blazer controversy was a thing that we definitely weren’t expecting,” says Lenart. “It brought a weird life to a whole different part of the game. No one could have predicted that people would see the Blonde Blazer character and think that she did not have true intentions. She’s always been this pure-hearted character to us. So, as developers, we’re heartbroken.
Dispatch Devs Regret Making It So Easy To Choose Invisigal
Looking at the player stats, they’re not wrong.
Lenart likens the whole situation to when someone is talking smack about one of your friends you know is a good person, but the team eventually learned to “roll with it and let people have their own experiences.” Thankfully, we now know that Blonde Blazer wasn’t actually a villain at all, and was probably one of the most normal and stable characters in the entire game.
However, that initial impression probably damaged how people viewed her character going forward, which may explain why Invisigal was by far the more popular romance option, though that one particular scene probably played a larger part if we’re being real honest. If you know, you know.
