Destiny 3 In Development, Says Credible Leaker

Destiny 3 In Development, Says Credible Leaker

With a historically low peak player count as interest dwindles, Bungie is reportedly planning to sunset Destiny 2 in the coming years to focus on the sequel.

This claim was originally made by @starsiza on X, but was later corroborated by credible leaker and dataminer Colony Deaks (via The Game Post), who explained that they have been sitting on the information for a while, but weren’t planning to share any concrete details until the project had taken shape.

As they explained, “Destiny 3 is in extremely early development”. Plans could and likely will change; after all, it was reported just last year that Bungie was too focused on Marathon for Destiny 3. Not to mention that Bungie could cancel Destiny 3 before it’s announced, as was rumoured to have happened in 2024.

However, with the leak now out in the open, Colony Deaks told their followers that they will “share more info in the coming months as we wait on the larger-scale things to develop”.

Destiny 3 Could Launch By 2030

In the meantime, Deaks gave us this tidbit to chew on, “With the Fate saga going for at least two more years, I’d say it’s around a five-year goal. With the full [development on Destiny 3] picking up after D2 finishes”.

That gives us a rough timescale: Bungie will conclude the Fate saga in 2027, sunset Destiny 2 soon after, ramp up development on the sequel, and launch Destiny 3 by 2030 at the earliest.

For a better idea of what to expect in the coming years, let’s look back at the original game.

Bungie released the final expansion for the first Destiny on September 20, 2016; Destiny 2 was released one year later on September 6. So, there was a significant gap between the last expansion for the first game and the launch of its sequel, but support continued with frequent hotfixes and updates until April 20, 2017.

@starsiza also claimed that Bungie is working on a Destiny 2 Classic in the vein of World of Wracraft.

Perhaps we’ll see something similar unfold for Destiny 2, though if the Fate saga ends in 2027 and Bungie has no further DLC planned, we could see a wider gap this time.

Of course, none of this has been confirmed by Bungie or its new parent company, Sony, so it’s worth taking these leaks with a grain of salt. Plans could change or be cancelled, as we already saw with the Destiny spin-off Payback.

For now, Bungie is busy with Marathon, a new live-service extraction shooter, getting it ready for launch after much controversy and an indefinite delay.
