If you make a game with a first-person perspective, there are probably going to be people asking why it wasn’t in third-person, and vice-versa. It’s just a fact about the gaming industry. Just look at how many perspective-changing mods there are. Fans certainly felt the same way about Cyberpunk 2077.
With the amount of customizations you can make to V, and all the cool gear, fans were pretty disappointed that it didn’t feature a third-person perspective like The Witcher 3, or at least a toggle. While CD Projekt Red probably had its reasons, the creative director of the sequel thinks the first-person perspective works better.
Cyberpunk 2077 Didn’t Have A Third-Person Perspective Because Of V
As spotted by GamesRadar+, Cyberpunk 2 creative director Igor Sarzyński took to Bluesky, speaking about why first-person perspective wouldn’t work for Cyberpunk 2077. “Purely from narrative design [point of view] I think subjective FPP works well with ’77 story, genre and world,” he said. “You’re a mind trapped in a decaying body with only means of leaving it being through technological consciousness processing (cyberspace; soulkiller; projection into external devices; braindaces).”

He also added that the “digital ghost”, Johnny Silverhand, is something only you as V can see, and a third-person perspective would make the visions feel more external than internal. As for third-person perspectives in general, Sarzyński said that they work better with clearly defined characters, rather than player avatars.
“TPP is better for more defined characters – Geralt, Kratos, Ellie – where you play-replay someone else’s story,” he said. “FPP lends itself to more avatar-like player characters. V exists somewhere in the middle of this spectrum but for reasons stated above, I feel FPP was better for ’77.”
“We Have No Such Plans”: Cyberpunk 2077 Devs Respond To Third-Person Mode Requests
There might be more Cyberpunk 2077 updates in the future, but don’t expect a third-person camera mode to be added.
I get what he’s trying to say; V is more of an avatar, whose looks and decisions can be directed by the player, so it makes sense playing through their eyes. Meanwhile, in the cases of The Witcher 3 and The Last of Us, we’re playing the characters’ stories, so a third-person perspective is more applicable. Still, it would have been cool to see your customized V in all their glory, especially with all the gear options that CDPR added to the game.
