Critical Role Already Has Plans For Life Without Its OG Cast

Critical Role’s Campaign 4 has been pretty well received by fans of the show, despite all the big changes that have been made recently. Not only does the show have a whopping 13 different members, including a mixture of new and old faces, but dungeon master Brendan Lee Mulligan has taken the reins this time instead of the ever reliable Matt Mercer.

It’s still pretty great, but a little different to what Critical Role fans are used to, and it turns out that there’s a very good reason for that. As much as we’d all love to have the power of immortality, people do actually get older and move on from projects after a while. Given how personality-led Critical Role is, plans are already being put in place to integrate new names and faces into the show, as it’s already preparing for life without its original cast.

In an interview with Business Insider (thanks Popverse), Critical Role’s chief operating officer and senior vice president of business and content development, Ed Lopez and Ben Van Der Fluit, eventually moved onto the topic of Critical Role’s future and its cast. Lopez explains that his and Van Der Fluit’s job is to expand “business longevity”, understanding that the current cast “can’t do this forever.”

It is my job and Ben’s job and Travis’s job to kind of figure out, ‘Hey, we can’t do this forever, and we have to figure out how to give this business longevity’.

He also says that Critical Role fans will start seeing more projects outside what the original cast has built, such as the video game that’s currently in the works by Dispatch developer AdHoc, and that appealing to a younger audience outside of Twitch and YouTube is an important factor in the business at the moment. That’s probably why we’re seeing so many fresh faces at the moment.

However, none of this means that Critical Role’s current cast is going anywhere any time soon. Jokingly, Lopez later said, “if they want to stream until they’re 80, we’ll do it.” So it sounds like there’s no rush to move people on, but don’t be surprised if you start seeing even more new people jump in.
