What’s an open-world adventure RPG title like Hytale without the option to encounter, fight, and potentially even domesticate a wide variety of animals while you’re out experiencing its wonderfully colorful pixel overworld? With the planet broken into biomes called Zones, you’ll find unique animals in pretty much each one.
Some animals are friendly toward your avatar right away, but others may be more feral and willing to attack you on sight when you do venture out from your starting point and encounter them. Between spawn locations and loot drops, here what you’ll need to know about the animals in Hytale.
Updated on February 19, 2026: Now that Hytale has gotten its first major update in early access, we’ve got a proper way to tame animals! As such, we’re updating our guide to help you tame every animal in Hytale, and we’re updating the formatting on the tables we’ve got to help you find every animal a little easier.
Animals Overview
How To Capture And Breed Animals
Like plenty of open-world sandbox games like it, Hytale features a variety of animals across the different Zones in the game, with each one acting as a unique biome to offer tons of animals you can’t find anywhere else.
The Best Sandbox Games
The sandbox genre covers dozens of different games. Here’s our list of the best titles you can enjoy on console and PC.
As you explore the world you’ve generated, you’ll meet a slew of different animals as you go, some singular and some in mobs that will often act as a pack. Animals might not see you right away, giving you the option to sneak up behind them to either fight them to slay them for their resource/loot drops or to tame them and use them as a riding mount or farm animal once you’ve established your base.
Plenty of animals drop valuable resources, not least of all being leathers and hides you’ll need for construction projects and some of the most impressive tools in the game. You’ll unfortunately need to kill plenty of these animals for their meat and leather, but there are also tons of renewable resources like eggs and milk that can be obtained by simply interacting with the animals that give these resources while holding the right tool. Use tools on these animals to collect without killing.
How To Tame And Mount Animals
Taming animals is easy after the first update for Hytale, we’re now able to more efficiently tame and capture animals than we’ve ever been before! While you used to need to make a feed bag at your Farmer’s crafting bench and lure them back to a fenced area that they couldn’t hop over to leave, now, simply approach a tameable animal in Hytale and press F to tame it.
Approaching these animals may take some time and repetition, since they may run away a bit at first until they begin to trust you. The animal will produce a thought bubble over its head when you try to interact, which will show you its favorite food. Should you try to tame an animal while holding its favorite food, you’ll instead see it eat your food and give the option to pet it instead.

Additionally in the update, we’re now able to more effectively mount and ride a few animals, including both camels and horses alike at the time of publishing on this guide.
In terms of breeding animals, that’s something we’re looking forward to either in a later update for Hytale’s early access or when the game comes out in its entirety sometime down the line. As of the time of publishing our guide, breeding is not available yet in Hytale.
Animal Behavior: Will It Attack You?
Animals that have seen you will have an exclamation mark over their heads. When you encounter animals in the wild, they’ll have one of a few different behavioral types that will decide how they react when they spot you.
- Passive animals don’t care much that you’re nearby even if they do see you. They’ll have the exclamation point, but they’re generally unbothered by your presence and won’t change their behavior with you there, and they’ll try to run if you fight them.
- Defensive animals can be a bit wary of you, but they tend to stay on their guard instead of outright attacking. If attack them, though, they’re ready to fight back.
- Hostileanimals, meanwhile, will attack as soon as they spot you. It’s best to sneak up on them if you’re trying to get a leg up i what’s likely going to be a combat situation ahead, since these guys aren’t waiting for you to make the first move.
Predators And Prey
Finally, as you wander through each biome in the game, you might come across sporadic animal bones or carcasses that you don’t remember leaving there yourself. This is because, in every biome you venture through in Hytale, you’ll find a dangerous predatorial animal that can and will eat smaller animals, as well as being immediately hostile to your player avatar when you lock eyes.
If you’re capturing animals to live back on your farm, the presence of predators means you’ll need to make secure fencing for your livestock that these predators can’t jump over. They’re able to vault single-high blocks, but placing your fence two blocks high around your captured animals should keep them safe.
