Like many survival games, food is pretty important in Hytale. Food items like Wild Berries and Raw Wildmeat will be some of the first items you’ll come across, and will likely be the first items you eat. Instead of restoring a hunger meter, food items restore health and give some great buffs, too.

Hytale: How To Turn Hides Into Leather
Leather is useful in Hytale, so you need to learn how to create some.
But you don’t want to survive off Wild Berries and raw meat forever, not when there are better options, and you need more health recovery during long journeys. For the best foods, it’s time to break out the Chef’s Stove and get cooking up some more filling options, like a delicious Apple Pie.
Hytale is currently in Early Access, so the information below may be subject to change in the future.
How To Cook Meals
The earliest way to cook meals is the Campfire, which can be crafted from your inventory or Workbench of any tier with four Sticks and any one Rubble. The Campfire allows you to cook basic meals, like Cooked Wildmeat or Roast Vegetables, using Wood, Sticks, or Charcoal as fuel.
The upgrade to the Campfire is the Chef’s Stove, which is crafted at a Workbench with two Copper Ingots, any ten Tree Logs, and any six Stone. When placed, it unlocks a much larger variety of recipes from three categories: Prepared, Baked, and Ingredients.
Until you obtain potions, eating food is the most effective way to restore your health. Most basic food items instantly restore your health by at least five percent and give you various buffs depending on the meal, such as Health Regen I or Stamina Regen I.
You can eat during battle, and multiple food items can be eaten at once to keep restoring your health, but the buffs they give won’t stack. The time will reset if it’s the same buff, or it will be rewritten by a stronger version.
Food is consumed by selecting an item from your hotbar and pressing the Secondary Action button. It’ll take a few seconds to consume the food, and some actions can interrupt eating, like climbing a block or getting hit by certain attacks.
What’s The Benefit Of Cooking Meals?
Cooked Meals do take more ingredients than the basic ones, but they’ll provide more instant health restoration than the other types, making them a lot more useful during combat if you run out of potions or don’t have any at all, and they often have better buffs that last longer.

Every meal is good, but the Skewers and Salads are the cheapest Cooked Meals to make and are the best early-game food until you get access to the Apple Pie recipe and Apples via an Apple Tree.
They provide a combination of Health Regen II and Stamina Boost II or Health Regen II and Health Boost II with Meat Skewers specifically, and they’re all made with easily farmable ingredients.
