Chained Echoes Creator Sues Publisher First Press Games

Chained Echoes dropped its big DLC last year, and while it wasn’t quite as strong as the base game itself, it was still a good time. Just how good was Chained Echoes? Good enough for a rare 90 on Metacritic, pulling off one of 2022’s highest-rated games. No video game is universally beloved (ask me about Tetris sometime), but I think it’s fair to call this one of Kickstarter’s great success stories.

Except for the part where the Kickstarter campaign is still bumping into unfortunate troubles over three years after release. December 2022 saw the game’s digital launch, and First Press Games was put in charge of all physical versions, the first of which—for PlayStation 4—is available via the publisher’s website. As for all the rest? Including higher-tier variants of the PS4 version itself? Nope. Not a hint of them.

As a result, Chained Echoes’ creator, Matthias Linda, has settled on a drastic action: a lawsuit.

Refunds Available Upon Request

Don’t let it be said that Matthias isn’t looking out for backers. Those who have long sought a physical copy on their preferred platform are being offered quick compensation if they choose to go that route. Alternatively, they can hold out, and once the developer has secured a new publishing partner, they’ll get what’s owed them.

“It’s been a bit over 2 years since the physical copies were supposed to be released by First Press Games and so far in 2026 nothing has arrived except the regular PlayStation 4 edition. Because of that I had to make a decision: I am terminating my business relationship with FPG and I am preparing a lawsuit.” -Matthias Linda

In a post on the Kickstarter campaign’s official page, Matthias explains the decision to a point, but notes that legal reasons forbid him from diving more deeply into the matter. “It is possible that new versions can only be produced once the lawsuit is over,” he admits, :but we are looking into that option. You can get your refund anytime though. Rest assured.” Shooting an email to the creator with the requisite verification details will grant backers their money back.

Comments are largely supportive of Matthias’ decision, which is nice to see. “Absolutely praying for the best outcome in your favor on this Matthias,” writes Jonathan Mendez. “I can’t imagine what this must feel like, to have to go this way,” Christian Lehmer laments. So on, so forth.

Speaking as one of those physical version backers, I’m going to hold off on the refund and join the chorus in rooting for Matthias.
