Brandon Sanderson Says He’s Moving Closer To Having A Triple-A Mistborn Game Made

It turns out, the avid Elden Ring player Brandon Sanderson is actually one of the world’s most popular fantasy authors, and he wants to adapt one of his series into a video game.

Sanderson has been playing games for a very long time, and the author often reminisces about the time he spent playing Halo while studying at Brigham Young University. He dipped his toe in video game development in 2022 when he collaborated with Unknown Worlds Entertainment on the lore of Moonbreaker, a neat take on a miniature-based strategy game.

Moonbreaker failed to gain any traction and has now become a talking point in the ongoing litigation between Krafton and the original founders of Unknown Worlds Entertainment.

Sanderson Is Courting Triple-A Developers

In the latest entry in his ‘State of the Sanderson‘ blog, the author revealed that he’s moving closer to finding a triple-A studio to work with on a Mistborn game (thanks, Wccftech).

“I’ve started to get some real interest on the video game front, and I feel I’m finally getting established enough that we can make a Mistborn game happen,” Sanderson reveals. “To that end, I’ve started talking to some AAA developers. This is at Step One only, but it’s an encouraging one. These rights were tied up with the film rights for the last… oh, six, seven years, so I didn’t get to test the market on them until recently.”

KPop Demon Hunters Probably Wasn’t Inspired By Brandon Sanderson, But It Sure Feels A Lot Like Mistborn

Rumi and Vin have more in common than you might expect.

However, Sanderson is wary of another situation where his intellectual property rights wind up lying dormant with a holding company that has no intention of adapting them.

“I’m trying to do things differently this time in an effort to retain control of my video game rights. I already have interest from some major players in the video game industry (who I like a lot). So if you are a decision maker at an AAA studio, or a major independent, and you’ve always wanted to make a Mistborn or Stormlight game… well, you would want to contact my reps now.”

The collective name of Sanderson’s various connected series is the Cosmere. A developer taking on Sanderson’s work would likely focus on a single series, rather than incorporating too much of the interconnected craziness of dozens of novels.
