Beyond’s Ending Shows Unmasked Samus

Beyond’s Ending Shows Unmasked Samus

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond players don’t agree on much, but at least everyone seems to think that Samus’ new unmasked design is the best she’s ever looked.

As every Metroid fan is painfully aware of, we’ve been waiting an incredibly long time for a new Prime game. Prime 4 was originally announced all the way back in 2017, and now that it’s finally launched, that means we ended up 18 years between the third and fourth game. That also means we’ve been waiting nearly two decades to see Samus take off her helmet again.

Spoilers for Metroid Prime 4: Beyond’s ending below.

Ever since Prime 4: Beyond was announced, Metroid fans have wondered whether Retro would let us see what Samus looks like under her helmet, especially with it being so long since the last entry in the Prime series. That is indeed the case, and it looks like everyone agrees that Retro cooked with her new look.

And She’s Never Looked Better

As is Metroid tradition, you can get a peek at Samus’ face throughout Prime 4: Beyond, as it briefly appears whenever you fire off a charge shot. To see the real deal, though, you’ll need to reach the end of the game, which has a cutscene featuring a proper look at an unmasked and shockingly detailed Samus.

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond Is Nothing Without Its Loneliness

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond better not be filled with characters like Miles Mackenzie.

Over the years, Samus has undergone a number of redesigns, from her terrifying appearance in Prime 2 to the more anime-inspired Other M. Prime 4: Beyond goes for a more realistic route, and it seems that fans who have beaten the game and seen the new design absolutely love it.

Twitter user RoytaMustDie retweeted an image of Samus’ unmasked look and called it their “favourite modern design” of the character thanks to it being a natural evolution of her look in the first Prime. The replies in that thread all agree that Prime 4’s version of Samus looks much better than anyone expected, so it’s a bit of a shame we only see her for one cutscene at the end of the game.

Still, even if Zero Suit (or Zero Helmet, at least) Samus does only make a typically brief appearance in Prime 4: Beyond, she does at least steal the show with some amazing facial animations and a killer design.
