Battlefield 6 Players Are Experiencing Strict IP Takedowns In Portal

When Battlefield 6 launched earlier this month, one of the first things new players did was check out Portal, the platform where you can create modes, maps and other oddities to your heart’s content. Naturally, that immediately took the form of recreating some of Call of Duty’s greatest maps, because nothing is cooler than experiencing your rival’s best offerings in your own game.

However, as quickly as players began nostalgia farming, both EA and Activision stepped up to threaten bans and execute IP infringement notices on such maps if players didn’t edit them. Flash forward to today, and one Battlefield 6 player has documented their situation in which they’re continuing to receive IP infringement notices even after taking action on what was being infringed.

What Started Out As A Novel Idea Has Turned Into Chaos

Over on Reddit, user HearMeOut-13 provided a status update on their COD Zombies-inspired creation titled “Project Osiris.” The creation, which sought to emulate the popular wave-based Zombies mode, immediately went viral before drawing the ire of Activision themselves.

The first takedown, which dates to October 23, resulted in the creator renaming every aspect of their mode as to not infringe on Activision’s ownership of elements like “Juggernog.”

Sounds fine enough, right? Well, wrong.

On October 30, the creator stated that they’d been hit with another IP infringement notice, this one coming with reportedly no IP to actually infringe upon.

“Zero COD trademarks. Zero copyrighted assets. Just gameplay mechanics,” they wrote of their rebranding. “They can’t be claiming trademark violation anymore — there are no trademarks. They can’t be claiming asset theft — I built everything in Portal’s tools.”

As it stands, their creation has been rendered inaccessible. Because of how vague the original notices are, it’s unclear at this point what’s being infringed on. After all, wave-based modes have existed long before COD and will exist long after COD, making the whole situation pretty frustrating for a community looking to create fun with the tools in front of them.
