The first encounter at the gate of the Emerald Grove brilliantly establishes what’s going on in act one of Baldur’s Gate 3. We learn that the Druids and Tieflings are holed up in the grove, and that there’s a goblin camp that’s been trying to wipe them out. There’s also Wyll, whose flamboyant entrance feels like it belongs in Borderlands. Overall, it’s the first large-scale combat scenario of the game.

It’s actually a relatively tough fight for those who are new to the game. Wyll has a high chance of getting killed, the scouts outside the gate don’t do much damage, and Zevlor and the Tieflings don’t do much ranged damage from the top of the gate. However, as one player found out, if you manage to get Zevlor down somehow, he’s powerful enough to one-shot each of the goblins.

Zevlor Joins The Fight

As discovered by axel_nobody_, if you can manage to get Zevlor down from the gate, he can wipe out the entire goblin attack party on his own. However, the trick is figuring out how to get him down. It seems they accidentally used a tip from the loading screen, which they didn’t know would apply to NPCs as well.

“During the first goblin fight at the grove gate I was wildshaped into a spider and shot a web surface into a group of the goblins,” they revealed. “This gave Zevlor the confidence to leap down from the bridge using the web as a landing pad and start one-shotting the goblins with his smites instead of his usual potshots. There’s a loading screen tip that mentions webs cancel fall damage, but to see an NPC take advantage of that in a new way was delightful.”

Larian Needs To Fix Wyll Before It Moves On From Baldur’s Gate 3

Adding more lines for Wyll – and making sure the right ones play – should have been the focus of a Baldur’s Gate 3 patch.

Zevlor being able to get down and join the fight in such a cavalier fashion wasn’t something we knew could happen, but then again the game keeps surprising us. Every time you think you know everything there’s to know about Baldur’s Gate 3, it finds a way to surprise you.
