Baldur’s Gate 3 brings up quite a few characters from the previous game. Jaheira and Minsc join our party to fight the Absolute, while Sarevok and Viconia play relatively minor roles. Then there’s Elminster. The renowned wizard comes to inform Gale and the party what Mystra wants him to do, and it’s not exactly a happy conversation.
He informs Gale that the goddess has instructed him to use the Netherese Orb to destroy the Netherbrain, killing himself in the process. It’s pretty nice of the old man to come all the way to inform a friend about this troubling news, but it turns out that the Elminster we spoke to wasn’t the real one.
This Ominous Warning Could Have Been An Email
As showcased by Even_Season1703 on Reddit, not many players knew that this version of Elminster is actually a construct, and opening up his character sheet reveals so. This version of him is a Simulacrum, which is essentially a clone with the same thoughts and feelings as the wizard who casts the spell. If you kill Elminster, you’ll notice that he is reduced to a puddle of snow.
While longtime fans may already know this, newer players are just finding out that Baldur’s Gate 3’s version of Elminster isn’t the prime version of the wizard. This led to a number of comments wondering why the wizard couldn’t spare a moment to tell his friend to sacrifice himself in person.
Given his reputation, the wizard is probably busy dealing with multiple world-ending problems. In fact, he probably has several Simulacrums fighting fires all over the realm. Fans couldn’t help but joke that Elminster used a magical version of an email to tell Gale that he needs to sacrifice himself.
“The guy tells his friend he needs to kill himself on their common ex’s behalf, and he can’t even be bothered to do it in person,” said one comment. “Elminster sent Gale the magic equivalent of a f***ing Zoom call AND ate his food rations, what a fucking prick.”
