Path to Menzoberranzan is probably the biggest Baldur’s Gate 3 custom campaign in the works, as it looks to recreate the second game in the series. We’ve been getting updates from the devs for a while now, but the ambitious project is likely far from ready. In the meantime, it seems another set of devs have decided to do their own remake of the original Baldur’s Gate.
Last year, a modder called 786r786 recreated Candlekeep, the starting point of the original game, using BG3’s mod tools. However, it seems like they got a taste for it, as they have now formed an entire team dedicated to remaking the entirety of Baldur’s Gate.
Baldur’s Gate Is Getting A Fan-Made Custom Campaign
As reported by Rock Paper Shotgun, 786r786 and his team are now called Deathbringer’s Reign, and have now repositioned the Candlekeep build as a sort of teaser for the eventual Baldur’s Gate remake. Their next demo will include locations like High Hedge, Beregost, the Friendly Arm Inn, and Shipwreck’s Coast.
The developer revealed that their recreation of Candlekeep started off as a “simple test” of Baldur’s Gate 3’s modding tools, but they never imagined that the community would love it so much.
“I received a lot of requests from fans of the original games to turn it into a full campaign, along with offers from some incredibly talented modders who volunteered to help,” they said. “Making an isolated custom campaign is actually a bit easier than making an extension to the base game; you don’t have to account for the incredibly vast amount of scenarios present in vanilla BG3, and you have full control over the player’s environment.”
The aim of the project is to remake everything included in Baldur’s Gate’s Enhanced Edition, except for the Siege of Dragonspear expansion, which they said might come as an add-on at a later date.
The developer added that the biggest challenge for the team will be to recreate the city of Baldur’s Gate in a 3D environment. “The sheer scale is daunting; the original game has over 100 interiors within the city, whereas BG3 features about 40 buildings in the Lower City. We have to figure out how to capture that content density while adjusting the layout to suit BG3’s modern gameplay and presentation,” said 786r786.
The Deathbringer’s Reign team is currently looking for more volunteers for the project. You can sign up on their Discord server.
